If you own a Xbox One and have been trying to buy something, play online, or even access some digital games you may have run into a problem. Xbox Live has been on shaky ground for over a week now. The service has been spotty every day sometimes affecting purchases of digital games, watching Netflix and other apps, and sometimes taking the entire service down. Microsoft has been pretty quiet about problem only saying that they were working on the problem and doing their best. Now it seems we may know why it’s stayed offline for so long.
A group calling themselves the New World Hackers claim to be taking down Xbox Live.
“We attacked Xbox to protest. Major companies like this have massive servers but no real protection. We want Xbox to update the protection they have, which isn’t much.”
They also claim this is a show of their “power” and could “honestly knock Xbox off the face of the Earth” and claim they took the service down in January as well.
Xbox hasn’t confirmed or denied the DDOS attack but that would explain the long term nature of this downtime. Also no word on if any sensitive information is even at risk. A DDOS attack typcially means aiming more traffic at a website or server until it simply can’t handle it anymore and breaks. Not entirely sure how this exposes Xbox Live’s vulnerabilities because to my limited knowledge, any publicly accessible server would have this problem.
