Sources inside Microsoft have confirmed to Kotaku two new models of Xbox are coming out over the next two years. Later this year is a smaller version of the Xbox One, and a beefier version is set to come out in 2017.
It’s been no secret that an upgraded version of the Xbox One was in the works, but what’s new is that it will technically be capable of supporting the Oculus Rift. Anonymous sources inside Microsoft have said that they’ve been pursuing a relationship with Oculus. It’s not a bad idea considering how much the market is leaning towards VR. Instead of developing their own VR alternative, they’re reaching out to one of the biggest in the market in order to directly compete with Playstation VR.
Also on tap is a slim version of the current Xbox One set to be release in late 2016, most likely arriving for the holiday market. Although with a bigger better one around the corner, you have to wonder just how many people are gonna drop a couple hundred on a soon-to-be defunct model.
The two consoles are part of another internal strategy codenamed “Project Helix” which attempts to unite the Xbox One and Windows 10 platforms. Games like Halo Wars 2 and Sea of Thieves are already announced for both console and PC, but we can probably expect a lot more future titles to show up on both. We’ve already seen shades of the Halo 5 showing up on PC in the form of Forge Mode, so let’s hope we get some big releases.
Hopefully we hear more about this at E3.
