Overwatch is Blizzard’s next big thing. It’s in beta right now and overall impressions seem mostly positive. So it wasn’t much of a surprise to see Overwatch make some waves at BlizzCon. It was assumed that Overwatch, a team based shooter similar to Team Fortress 2 with MOBA elements, would be free-to-play. Hearthstone is a big success in the free-to-play space and Blizzard’s other games have free elements in them as well. Overwatch has other ideas however.
For $40 you can buy Overwatch’s basic version on PC. An “Origins” edition will also come out for $60 and be available for PC, Xbox One, and PS4. Origins will add on skins and other “digital goods” but both versions will contain all twenty one heroes. Also, from what I can tell, this means only the $60 version will be available on consoles, not the cheaper $40 one.
Overwatch will be out next spring and the beta has me interested but I’m not looking to drop $60 for it just yet. I feel like Blizzard needed to ramp up to this announcement more and get fans further interested in the game. Hopefully Overwatch is worth the end price and doesn’t feel like an entry free to what should be a free-to-play game.
