In what might be the least timely move of all time, Netflix announced today that an animated series based on Konami’s Castlevania series will be released on the streaming service later this year.
The season will be separated into four parts, with each part clocking in at around 30 minutes in length, making this seem kind of like an OVA-style joint. Netflix describes the series as “following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hands of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself.”
Although not much else is known about the series, we do know that it will be produced by Warren Ellis, a popular comic artist, and Adi Shankar, who helped produce films like Dredd and The Grey.
Although it’d be all too easy to dismiss this project as nothing more than a pipe dream, the immediacy of the projected release date and the amount of names attached to the project makes the actual release of it seem pretty believable. It’s interesting to see that apparently Konami has not forgotten that they own the rights to Castlevania, and that games in the franchise other than Lords of Shadow do in fact exist!
Although I might not be the most die-hard of Castlevania fans, I do hope that this series stays true to the source material, and we get beautiful goth twinks, instead of something like Captain N’s Alucard.
