Hey everybody, my name’s Maverick, and I’m one of the new contributors for Video Game Choo Choo! I’m really excited for the opportunity to work with such a talented group of folks and to get my hands dirty in the wonderful world of posting content online.

I’m a simple Jersey boy who went to college in NYC for a change of pace and I’ve been here for nearly 7 years since. Within that stretch of time, I’ve made some very fantastic pals, become an avid advocate for education reform, and learned how long it takes to walk from the West Village to Williamsburg. Simply put, I won’t hesitate to tell you that I am, in fact, walkin’ here. Lets go Mets, pastrami on rye, things of that nature.

Games have been a part of my life since I can remember asking my older sister to beat the last world of Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for me on our shared GameBoy Color. I ended up being a Nintendo fan out of convenience, and ultimately had the PS3 and 360 era of online gaming pass me by once I saw the price gap between those game libraries and the used sections for the PS2 and Wii that I’d look through at GameStop. The economic impact of gaming has always been in the forefront of my mind as a result, but that’s also led me to be a little more mindful of the stuff I’d ask my parents for and eventually buy on my own, both in terms of discounts and just making sure I had a good time by the credits rolling. Katamari Damacy and Yakuza are among my favorites as a result but aside from horror games (because I’m a baby), I’ll play anything from JRPGs to idle games where I just get to make the number go up.

Outside of gaming, I’m a big fan of anime and cartoons. My favorite wrestlers are Tetsuya Naito and Maki Itoh, and I’m itching for the chance to safely go watch a live wrestling show or a band play at a bar. Like many people this year I took a deeper dive into exploring city pop but I listen to just about anything from the local bands my friends play in, to the bachata and cumbia classics I grew up listening to whenever I had to be dragged to a family party. My sun sign’s Scorpio with my moon/rising in Leo, I know how to play the saxophone, and thanks to the last year being stuck at home I’ve really upped my cooking game. Fun Fact: I share a birthday with Season 8 Episode 2 of The SImpsons, “You Only Move Twice.”

With all that said, I’m really excited to start this journey in learning how to provide my own insight in the culture pieces I’ve grown up with, and I can’t wait to learn so much from both the people I’ll be working alongside and all of you reading this. Catch y’all later!
