After months of delays, Bethesda Studios formally announced, via blog post, that they have given up plans on releasing mod support for Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition on PS4.
After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition.
Like you, we are disappointed by Sony’s decision given the considerable time and effort we have put into this project, and the amount of time our fans have waited for mod support to arrive. We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience. However, until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available.
We will provide an update if and when this situation changes.
Previous updates had woven a confusing situation filled with issues like proprietary audio formats, file size restrictions, and steep content filtering. Whoever is to blame, Bethesda seems to be pointing a very heavy finger at Sony, perhaps in hope of convincing fans to try and create enough of a storm to get Sony to reconsider. Regardless, one has to wonder how Bethesda got this far into the process only to find out these restrictions after announcing plans for mod support almost a year ago. It feels like the type of scenario where both parties are actively stopping each other in an endless loop without cease. Hopefully at some point PS4 owners may get a chance to mod future Bethesda games like a new Elder Scrolls or Fallout, but as for the current entries, it doesn’t seem likely.
Like Bethesda, we will update if this situation changes, hopefully for the better.
