Assassin’s Creed Origins was a pretty damn good game, and it only makes sense that after pushing out another banger, Ubisoft would return to a more annual schedule for the series. Enter Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which will be following in the footsteps of Origins by taking players all the way back to 431 BC, and giving a Spartan’s perspective on the Peloponnesian War.
In terms of protagonist you’ll be given the choice between a male or female lead, who will share the same background and overall story. The story will follow the same general beats Assassin’s Creed is known for, with a focus on historical accuracy, but players will actually be able to interact with dialogue for the first time in the series, choosing different branching paths and options to (hopefully) make their experience their own. Gameplay seems to be in the same mold as Origins, but this time around there will be a larger focus on the naval aspect popularized especially by Asssassin’s Creed IV and Rogue.
The st0ryline will alternate between a focus on the ancient hyper-advanced civilization that has always served as the bedrock of the series, as well as the newly rebooted modern setting with the spunky bomber jacket wearing Layla. Ubisoft also suggests that much like how Origins featured a large amount of Egyptian mysticism and folklore, Odyssey will feature a hefty focus on the elaborate mythology of ancient Greece.
As a hefty fan of Assassin’s Creed Origins, I am exceptionally excited to see Ubisoft continue to present the lesser explored histories in these games, and I’m also glad you can finally just outright play as a lone woman in a mainline Assassin’s Creed. I might be tentative given the series’ history post-Ezio, but Origins has got me believing enough in a post-Bayek game.
