The RPG Factory that brought us Lost Sphear and I Am Setsuna has decided that they are too good for turn based strategy now. They have finally moved forward into hack-and-slash dungeon crawling mechanics! The newest release date trailer contains a lot of exciting details that have me way more optimistic about our Dickensian RPG Developers.
Lost Sphear did permanent psychic damage to me in ways that I can’t process, but I am still really excited for Oninaki because it is clearly talking about Life & Death as manifested concepts in ways the first two games tip-toed around (to their detriment). As the trailer said, this is the story of a watcher, which I assume is someone watching over the worlds of the living and dead, which sounds sick as hell. The biggest problem with Lost Sphear was that it barely hung onto the lightest sci-fi fantasy story about ‘things disappearing’ and Oninaki immediately feels much more solid in its tone and structure. Otherwise, combat looks very fast and still centered around combining the effects of your party, so I’m excited with what I’m seeing! The factory is pumping out their third game in four years and they are really starting to hit a stride. It will be out August 22nd, 2019 on the PS4, Steam, and Switch.
