Starting on Sep. 2nd Playstation 4 owners will be able to beta test prerelease system software. Similar to the Xbox Preview Program, users can sign up and recieve firmware updates before they roll out to the general public. This means any significant updates will be yours to test out and experience first before anyone else. On the Xbox One this has meant dabbling in things like Xbox 360 emulation and Windows 10 game streaming.
Playstation’s updates are somewhat notorious for occasionally not working or breaking hardware. Granted the PS4 era hasn’t had widespread issues like the PS3 did. Hopefully whatever back end testing pipeline they’ve set up will avoid any nasty beta screw ups. Testing out the software in soft beta launches is a great idea I wish Sony had started years ago. But if this means better software for PS4 owners then I’m all for it.
You can sign up for the beta here and for now they’re saying the number of beta testers will be limited, so sign up quickly if you’re interested.
