Over the summer, Square Enix finally indicated that, yes, Kingdom Hearts 3 is in development. Then, news came out during the D23 Expo that Big Hero 6 would be a featured world in KH3. Now, leaks are suggesting that Kingdom Hearts fans may be getting more than we bargained for – namely, a whole other game.

Of course, this is all in the rumor mill, so it’s hard to say what’s true. But regardless, Kingdom Hearts fan site KH13 reports new information found on the LinkedIn profile of a Square Enix designer. It indicates the existence of a game called Kingdom Hearts 2.9, apparently in development for PS3 and PS4. A screencap of the page is below:

If this is to be believed, it could mean a lot for Kingdom Hearts 3, not to mention this whole 2.9 business. Finally, Pixar properties in Kingdom Hearts? A multiplayer function? It’s almost too good to be true, and of course, who knows if it actually is. As for 2.9, speculation is running wild on what it could be. My bet, if this is legit, is that 2.9 is a new remaster of KH 2 as well as a few of the other games which lead up to 3. Based on how little is listed, I can’t imagine it would be a whole new game, and especially not with the brunt of effort going towards finishing 3. But, who knows.

This information seems to confirm the incident where Kingdom Hearts 2.9 was briefly listed on the E3 2015 “Square Enix Presents” schedule before being removed. Whatever ends up happening, it’s nice to hear any sort of news about Kingdom Hearts, especially since the younger me has been waiting ten years for a proper sequel to 2.
