Nintendo has announced that Animal Crossing New Leaf, the most recent mainline entry in the Animal Crossing series, will be getting a large update this fall four years after its initial release. The update will feature brand new amiibo figure and card support.

This new update will include the ability to scan cards used in last years Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer to have certain villagers come to your town. You’ll also be able to tap certain amiibo into the game to unlock bonus features such as furniture and clothes. While this feature is primarily used for Animal Crossing series amiibos, players will be able to scan in other series’ amiibo, such as Callie and Marie from Splatoon, to bring crossover items into their game.

Interestingly enough, Nintendo has a mysterious Animal Crossing themed phone app scheduled to come out around the same time as this big update. It wouldn’t be that surprising to see some connectivity between the new app and the 3DS title being another new feature of the update but we’ll have to wait and see.

While there is no information yet on a North American or European release date, its safe to bet based on the size of the update and the success of Amiibo-based paraphernalia that we’ll probably be seeing this patch hit Japan in the near future.
