The first E3 appointment I took this past summer was for Gwent, the upcoming free to play Witcher spin-off game from CD Projekt Red. In fact, just today I got into the Gwent early access beta running on PC and Xbox One, but now it seems a major change is coming to the competitive card game. Damien Monnier, the game’s designer and co-creator, is leaving CD Projekt Red.

Damien offered no real reason and his Twitter bio suggests he was also working on CD’s next big game, Cyberpunk 2077.

Eurogamer reached out to both Damien and CD Projekt Red who only lamented Damien’s leaving and reassured everyone that Gwent has a large team and doesn’t hinge on just one developer. Still, it’s very strange to see someone leave so early on a project. Gwent still doesn’t have a concrete release date but what I’ve played of the beta, and what I saw at E3, has me pretty excited. Hopefully the project can stay on track and Damien can move on to something just as exciting.
