Directly to You, The Mario Section

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars is being remade. It’s unknown what exactly will be changed (besides the graphics, which are quite divisive) in this version, but there seem to be fully animated cutscenes! We can all see Mallow and Geno again on November 17th 2023.

Princess Peach will be starring in her own game next year. Nothing besides a teaser was shown, but it seems to take place on a stage? Hopefully this one isn’t as sexist as the last time Peach was the star of the show.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe‘s next wave will include three new racers and some new tracks. The racers are Kamek, Petey Piranha, and Wiggler, and the tracks include a brand new course set in The Bathroom called Squeaky Clean Spring.

Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, the most mid Luigi’s Mansion game, is getting ported to Switch next year. (Please put the first Luigi’s Mansion on something that isn’t 3DS thank you!)

The final Mario announcement was the series’ return to 2D with Super Mario Bros. Wonder. With a gorgeous art style, playable Daisy, and an elephant power up, Wonder seems like the kick in the pants 2D Mario has needed for many years. It’s due out October 20th.

The Rest of the Direct

It’s related to Mario but not fully so it’s not in the section above: We’re getting a new Warioware game that’s specifically a sequel to Smooth Moves on the Wii, which was arguably the best in the series. Warioware: Move It! will release November 6th and promises over 200 new microgames.

Pikmin 4 got a new trailer, showcasing new modes such as Dandori Battle, in which you fight plant based foes to show off your Pikmin prowess. There’s also nighttime missions, which task you with gathering resources from glowing mounds and teaming up with new Glow Pikmin. Pikmin 4 sprouts July 21st.

Pikmin 1 and 2 are also now released on Switch digitally. Physical copies will release September 22nd.

We got a new look at Pokemon Scarlet and Violet’s DLCs. Not too much new info but there’s a handful of returning Pokemon confirmed for each set. Game Freak claims “The Teal Mask” will be out in the fall and “The Indigo Disk” will release in winter.

Detective Pikachu Returns sees our favorite Ryan Reynolds character not played by Ryan Reynolds solving new mysteries with his…are they going to have the same twist as the movie in this? Like, we all saw the movie already, it’ll be pretty deflated if they’re just building up to the same thing, right? Whatever, new game on October 6th.

The Rocksteady Batman trilogy is coming to Switch in the Fall.

A new Dragon Quest Monsters game, The Dark Prince, has been announced. It seems to take place around the events of Dragon Quest IV, since Solo shows up at the end of the trailer.

Star Ocean: The Second Story is getting a remake too. This will be yet another 2DHD Square Enix game, and will be releasing on PS5, PS4, and Steam as well.

The Switch version of the Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol 1 will include the NES version of Metal Gear as well as the non-canon second NES game Snake’s Revenge.

Penny’s Big Breakaway is a new 3D platformer by the folks at Evening Star, who previously worked on Sonic Mania. You play as a girl named Penny who uses a yo-yo to traverse a colorful and bouncy world.

An adaptation of tabletop roleplaying game Gloomhaven is coming to Switch September 18th. (Let’s hope they fix the frame rate by then though—because yeesh.)

Vampire Survivors is dropping on Switch August 17th with a new four player couch co-op mode.

Mythforce is a new melee-focused roguelike that’s stylized after He-Man era cartoons. It’s due later this year.

Splatoon 3‘s next splatfest will have you choosing between vanilla, strawberry, or mint chocolate chip ice cream. I know my allegiance.

Palia will allow you to build a “cozy life” in its free to play multiplayer adventuring world. It releases this winter.

Don’t worry folks, there’s another farm RPG. Fae Farm is that. September 8th. Have at it.

Silent Hope is a new XSEED RPG set in the same universe as Rune Factory. Seven silent heroes are tasked with reclaiming the power of speech through dungeon crawling. It’s due out October 3rd.

What Else Do We Got?

Following up on the previously discussed Metal Gear Solid Master Collection, at least some of the contents of the next volume seem to have surfaced. Twitter user Nitroid found some evidence on the website for the collection pointing towards Metal Gear Solid 4, 5, and Peace Walker being included in the future release, with IGN later corroborating this. Let’s all hope we get Metal Gear Ac!d, Portable Ops, Revengence, and Ghost Babel in there to truly complete the series.

Final Fantasy racing game Chocobo GP has been re-released as a $50 game that allows for access to all the previous microtransaction content. All content can now be unlocked in game without paying extra. If you downloaded the demo version, Chocobo GP Lite, you can buy an upgrade DLC so you can keep your progress.

The original version of Call of Duty: Warzone, “Caldera“, is going offline on September 21st. This version lasted three years, with the current 2.0 version attached to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II.

And finally, according to information pulled from a recent meeting report of the Los Angeles Tourism Board of Commissioners, E3 is possibly canceled in 2024 and 2025 as well. Long may Keighley reign.

Sony had a showcase where they unveiled a truly dire piece of new tech, alongside some questionable games, and The Embracer Group has been having a truly dire week.

What A Thrill. . .

Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater (pronounced “Delta”) has been announced. This remake has been described by the development team to be a “faithful recreation of the original story and game design” with evolution to both gameplay and visuals. Konami has confirmed that this remake will use the original voice cast for Snake Eater. This will mark David Hayter’s return to voice Naked Snake since Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker in 2013.

Alongside this announcement comes the news of Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Volume 1. This first volume will include the original Metal Gear Solid with VR Missions included alongside the HD Collection versions of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. PSN has confirmed that this volume will also include the original Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. One small note is that Konami stated there would be “minimal edits to copyrighted content,” which most likely pertains to the stock footage used in some cutscenes. Konami Spain has confirmed that this would collection would also see a physical release when the game releases Autumn 2023 for PS5, PC, and Xbox One.

Back In The New York Groove

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will be releasing later this fall for PS5. Insomniac’s follow up to the 2018 open world game features several new villains and mechanics for players to immerse themselves in. The trailer shows Kraven the Hunter planning to invade New York City and hunt down various Marvel heroes and villains. This plan leads them to hunt down Dr. Connors – The Lizard – but not without a fight from Peter Parker. This game will also incorporate the alien Symbiote, so expect an appearance from Venom in this sequel. Gameplay features the chance to play as both Parker and Miles Morales in different sections of the game along with an updated UI. Further news will develop in anticipation of this sequel’s 2023 release.

The Other PlayStation News

Other announcements from the showcase include Bungie’s Marathon, a Tarkov-styled shooter set in space, a first for Bungie. Square Enix has Final Fantasy XVI releasing June 22nd along with the announcement of Foamstars, a new area-based shooter akin to Splatoon. I’m sure the SMP freaks will love this one! Capcom’s letting the real heads know what’s up by releasing custom skins and other pre-order bonus content for Street Fighter 6 along with another trailer for Dragon’s Dogma 2. Revenant Hill is a game about Twigs the cat needing to pay rent and building a community in 1919. This is the first game by The Glory Society, a co-op studio founded by Night in the Woods co-creators Bethany Hockenberry and Scott Benson which will be available for both PS4 and PS5. You can catch the other releases from this showcase below.

Truly More Like Nintendon’t

Nintendo’s put out a new firmware update for the 3DS and it’s primed to take hackers down. The update Ver. 11.17.0-50 released on Monday, with hacking groups noticing this update ruined many documented methods to homebrew the handheld. However, community members have quickly been able to document what options are available for 3DS owners post-update. With the closure of the e-shop earlier this year, the 3DS’s ease to hack has been all the more appreciated. Maybe Nintendo will take a hint about library access given how it’s still easy to hack the dang thing.

Nintendo also blocked an indie game about mischievous little guys because it might teach kids about gambling (it doesn’t). Sunshine Shuffle is a game about playing Texas Hold ‘Em with a group of bank robbers. Xalavier Nelson Jr., developer of the game, has talked at length about Nintendo blocking the store page on accusation of teaching kids how to gamble, something Nintendo definitely doesn’t want happening. Sunshine Shuffle is available on Steam, so go ahead and give these adorable critters some love!

Life Is Strange, Unfortunately Layoffs Aren’t

In more pressing news, Deck Nine, developers of 2021’s Life is Strange: True Colors, laid off 30 members of its staff. Narrative designer Elizabeth Ballou tweeted about the layoffs on May 19th noting that several leads were affected as well. This news comes ahead of their next game in collaboration with Telltale Games, The Expanse: A Telltale Series, set to release in July. While no reason for the layoffs has been given, the studio states that those affected are “talented people who did nothing wrong,” for whatever that’s worth. Solidarity to the leads who chose to take the brunt of this impact, and best of luck to them getting back on their feet.

In More Hopeful Worker’s News

Unions! Successful ones are becoming more prevalent, so here’s updates on two that have moved forwards! Paizo, the studio that creates TTRPGs such as Pathfinder, has made a tentative agreement with their union. The union will be meeting in the coming weeks to go over the contract and potentially approve of it.

Similarly, Bandcamp has formed their own union, the first union under Epic Games. Bandcamp’s union still needs to be recognized and negotiation must still occur, but this is a major step towards a fair work environment at the best place to buy music on the web.

A Marvelous News Update

Marvelous Inc. released their own game showcase on Thursday. This presentation mentions a Story of Seasons entry with potential multiplayer features in the near future. We also saw news about Rune Factory: PROJECT DRAGON, a spinoff of the franchise with a traditional Japanese aesthetic, as well as a true Rune Factory 6. Fashion Dreamer is a design game made by the creators of the original Style Savvy series set to release later this year. In new IP developments, Loop8: Summer of Gods is a JRPG with a “unique, emotional AI” that will respond to the actions and decisions you make in game. Loop8 is set to release June 6th with Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life and Rune Factory 3 Special also slated for release this year. Tune into the showcase below to see what other news might pique your interest! We’ve certainly got folks on staff who know their way around a farm sim or JRPG.

Looks Like We’re Gonna Have to Wishlist on Steam!

Dangeresque: The Roomisode Triungulate! will be available to play later this summer. Play as Dangeresque, Strong Bad’s famous action movie persona, as you point and click your way through various trials and tribulations. This will feature the original flash game released in 2008 with full voice over and revamped scenes. Two other “roomisodes” will also be available, sure to be chock full of thrills, chills, and totally authentic stunts! The game will release on Steam, itch.io, and “maybe iOS.” Be ready to fight the law, and also fight the crime but not as much. Dangeresque!

With the heavy stuff out of the way, we go into Discord’s tease of NFT’s, X-Box’s twitter getting deleted, Among Us and Baba is You are getting updated, and the complete messes that are the Popeye game and the Grand Theft Auto Trilogy remasters. Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3 along with Jump Force are being removed from digital storefronts while 1 vs 100 is coming back. The Hat in Time developers are teasing something and I Maed a Game with Zombies In It just popped up for free on steam.

The dynamic duo have also been playing a few games, with Maverick digging deep into Trails of Cold Steel 3 and Scott really just wanting to spend all his time in Inscryption when he’s not playing Cruelty Squad.

Despite the fact that many people currently perceive Konami as going up in flames, Metal Gear Solid V has proven itself to be a hit, selling five million copies thus far and raking in plenty of critical praise. So, the idea of a follow-up of some kind isn’t too surprising. But with everything that’s gone down at Konami (as if you need another reminder), what the hell would this follow-up be? In the print edition of today’s Nikkei Konami feels a “large-scale investment will become necessary” when they start development.

A phrase like that seems to indicate a game on the AAA scale, but literally nothing can be said for sure. This game could be a full-blown all-platform sequel, a small-scale mobile endeavor, or, yes, a pachinko machine. Assuming that it’ll be an AAA game, what can be said for Kojima’s involvement? The fallout from that was such an ordeal it’s unlikely that he’d be dying to get involved, especially since he seems to have finally parted ways with the company. But then again, Konami insists he’s “on vacation,” even though Konami has apparently just killed around 35 jobs by shutting down Kojima’s LA studio, according to a rumor posted by Duke Nukem creator George Broussard:

Whatever happens with this rumored Metal Gear title, if it gets made at all, will be just another brick in the wall of Konami’s House of Crazy. On one hand, something like a mobile title or gambling machine will surely manage to inspire even more anger at the company. On the other, a AAA sequel not involving Kojima will probably put off a lot of dedicated fans – but after how well MGSV has performed so far, is that even an issue anymore? Konami can apparently sell Metal Gear with or without Kojima, and what that means for the future of the series is anyone’s guess.
