What do Anthony Fantano, LEGO, and Under Night have in common? They're all news stories from this week!

This is less an announcement week and more of a series of updates and revelations. Things are always happening in this industry, that’s for sure.

Anthony Fantano, the Internet’s Busiest Music Nerd, has gotten entangled in a court case with Activision over a popular meme audio he created. The audio, in which he shouts that there’s too many slices of pizza, was uploaded to Tik Tok’s audio library and was used by thousands for memes, but Activision used it for an ad promoting the new Crash Bandicoot party game. Fantano threatened legal action, and Activision answered similarly. This raises the question of if Fantano uploading the audio to the audio library meant brands and companies could use it as well without financial compensation.

Yuka Kitamura, composer of FromSoftware titles such as Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring, has left the company. She will now be working as a freelance composer.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Today I have an announcement to make.
I have decided to leave FromSoftware, the company I worked for, and to start working new as a freelance composer in this August.
— Yuka Kitamura / 北村友香 (@_Yuka_Kitamura_) August 1, 2023

Labor’s Continued Struggles

Kickstarter has updated their AI use policy. Now, if a “creator” uses AI in their project, they must attribute how they used AI, and that will be listed on the project’s page.

eBay has been charged with refusing to recognize the union TCGPlayer, the card sale website they bought in 2022, voted to form earlier this year.

Last week, Project Moon of Limbus Company fame ended the contract of one of their artists due to threats levied by right wing incels. Now, the CEO of the company, Kim Jihoon, spoke on Twitter, saying that anyone who claims the firing was unjust will be met with potential legal action.

Anita Sarkeesian’s Feminist Frequency project, in which common tropes in media was criticized from a feminist viewpoint, is shutting down after fifteen years. While often surface level and not without faults in its critique, Feminist Frequency’s Tropes vs Women in Games series did usher in a variety of new voices into games criticism, and changed the landscape of video games forever.

More Standard Game Announcements

Treasure’s beloved SHMUP Radiant Silvergun is coming to Steam on August 18th.

Nintendo rumors abound, one big and one small. The small one first, as LEGO is seemingly gearing up to announce some Animal Crossing sets in the near future.

As for the big rumor, the next Nintendo console is supposedly gearing up for announcement. Prominent leakers are saying the new console will be similar to the Switch, with an eight inch LCD screen and 512GB internal memory. Backwards compatibility with the Switch is still up in the air, but said leakers are claiming it will release sometime late in 2024.

And hey, it’s Evo right now, so we’ll tell you more fighting game news next week. The one thing that got in under the door was Under Night In-Birth 2 Sys:Celes, the full sequel to French Bread’s non-Melty Blood hit.

Wow. Stay calm. Unexpected as it was, Psychonauts 2 was announced earlier tonight at The Game Awards. Jeez. I’m, uh, honestly overwhelmed. Okay. Anyway.

Ten years later, the sequel to the greatest cult game ever made has been confirmed, and it’s being partially produced through crowdfunding. The Psychonauts 2 campaign is up on Fig with a goal of $3,300,000. At the time of writing, not even thirty minutes later, it’s just over $100,000. According to the page, the game’s hub world will be inside Psychonauts HQ:

In Psychonauts 2, Raz realizes his dream and visits Psychonauts Headquarters. However, when he gets there, he finds it’s not the perfect place he expected and quickly realizes that the Psychonauts need him more than he needs them.

The campaign rewards include everything from digital copies of both games to a Raz figure to a visit to Whispering Rock, which is apparently somewhere in California. The funding ends on January 7th, and the game itself is estimated for release in Fall of 2018. The page also mentions that 2 Player Productions will be filming a documentary on the game’s production.

Personally, I’m beyond excited to see one of my favorite games of all time finally getting the sequel everyone’s been hoping for. If you’re so inclined, check out the campaign video below:

The other night, a short teaser was posted to the YouTube account “IndivisibleRPG,” which as the name implies, announced an RPG titled Indivisible. Lab Zero Games have set the title for an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, and if the incredible amount raised for Skullgirls is any indication, Indivisible won’t have any trouble meeting its goal.

Not much has been said about the plot, but the game will feature a girl named Ajna who “sets out on a globe-trotting journey to discover the secret behind her mysterious powers.” Indivisible is also set to feature a soundtrack from composer Hiroki Kikuta, known for Secret of Mana and Soul Calibur V.

Perhaps most importantly, the game will be a departure from the fighting game mechanics of Skullgirls and instead will be inspired by games such as Valkyrie Profile and Super Metroid. No real word on how these styles will come together, but Indivisible is intended to be a “fresh spin” on action RPG gameplay. The visual style of the game looks a lot like Skullgirls, but the announcement trailer also betrays a more beautiful painterly look reminiscent of games like Bastion.

For those of you itching to get your hands on Indivisible, fear not – the Indiegogo campaign as well as a playable prototype are set for this September, and the final version of the game is set to launch in 2017. Watch the announcement trailer below:

Three years ago (wow!), the creator of everyone’s favorite shipping fodder/extreme character death simulator/MS Paint webcomic Homestuck raised over two million dollars to fund an adventure game named Hiveswap. The Kickstarter set a goal of June 2014 for a release date, and as can clearly be seen, we’ve moved well past that mark with little to no indication the game is anywhere near finished. As relayed by Tumblr user and occasional Homestuck artist ipgd, the reasons behind the delay are more extensive than previously thought.

Originally, Hiveswap was being developed by company The Odd Gentlemen, obviously with funds raised by the Kickstarter. However, it appears that The Odd Gentlemen took this money and instead funneled it into the development of King’s Quest and possibly Neil Gaiman’s Wayward Manor. As a result, creator Andrew Hussie’s company What Pumpkin has been forced to terminate the contract and must instead build the game in-house from the ground up, lacking the full funding they previously possessed.

According to ipgd, the game “isn’t in any danger of falling through,” despite the extensive problems faced by the development staff. So far, there’s been no real reaction by Sierra or Activision to the reports that Kings Quest has been developed with embezzled funds. Regardless, it’s reassuring for fans to know what’s been going on with such an anticipated release, especially when these details have been kept in the dark.

For those of you not following crowdfunding news, Keiji Inafune’s new Mega Man Legends successor Red Ash is now on Kickstarter. But here’s the kicker – Red Ash has two Kickstarters. That’s more than just one.

This isn’t because Red Ash is two games, but because it is one game and one anime. Or at least, that’s the plan: STUDIO4℃ is set to produce the anime, but the $150,000 goal on the Kickstarter is for a mere five minutes of animation. Stretch goals include $650,000 for a second 15 minute episode, or a whopping $2,480,000 to pull it all together into a feature film, but it remains to be seen if the Kickstarter can garner even enough support for the base goal: The campaign has only raised $50,000 at the time of publication, two days after being launched. (Editor’s note: Kickstarters often see the bulk of their funding at the very beginning and end of their campaign.)

The game itself is set for a goal of $800,000, and since Mighty No. 9 made just over triple its initial goal and crowdfunding for Shenmue 3 has already broken four million, its reasonable to assume fans will pull together to fund the project. The concept of a storytelling universe unified by a simultaneous game and animation is pretty interesting, but only time will tell if it can be pulled off.

The game’s Kickstarter can be found here, and the anime’s Kickstarter can be found here.
