And we’re back, John, Rose, and Maverick are here to talk about the games they’ve been playing and all the news around the games industry. John’s still playing Witch on the Holy Knight when he’s not been playing Sakuna: of Rice and Ruin. Maverick also been on the VN grind with The House in Fata Morgana while playing a bunch of Pizza Tower. Both he and Rose have been digging into Hi-Fi Rush and Rose has been playing Fire Emblem Engage, the Steamworld Build demo, Trails in the Sky The 3rd, and Neptunia Sisters vs Sisters.

In the news, even more Games as Service games got shut down alongside Rumbleverse with Knockout City, Crossfire X, Back4Blood, Love live School Idol Festival, and the mobile versions of Battlefield and Apex Legends. EA also cancelled a single player game in the Apex Legends/Titanfall universe that was for all intents and purposes Titanfall 3. None of the big 3 console makers are going to have a presence at the new E3, and The Sims 4 has a trans inclusive update adding top surgery scars to the character creation.

This week’s bulletin overall has some surprises, so buckle in!

First off, Iron Galaxy Studios has announced that Rumbleverse will be shuttering its servers at the end of the month. The melee-based wrestling-inspired battle royale was truly a shakeup to the system between its multiple beta tests that took into consideration the player requests and the inclusion of various moves and items, including a whole keyblade. There was much fun to be had, and in a final offering back to its community the Rumbleverse battle pass is free to everyone with all items unlocked as of what the game had planned. Head over to Grapital City while you still can, but still keep some hope in your heart as Iron Galaxy might have future plans for this series in whatever form it may have.

On the trend of virtual closings happening this week, Knockout City announces that it will shut its servers down on June 6th. The dodgeball battle royale game saw similar excitement in its initial beta and, while disheartening to see, the game will be seeing some form of postmortem existence in the form of a private hosted server version of the game available for download on Windows PCs later this year. And if you thought EA related shutdowns would end there, Apex Legends Mobile and Battlefield Mobile will be shutting down this year. EA CEO Andrew cited multiple reasons for the shutdown from issues of immersion with the screen size to the inability of retaining casual audiences in a way that would feel justifiable given the teamwork mechanics inherent to each. There might be a chance for both mobile shooters to make a return, but for now you can expect Apex Legends Mobile to shut its servers down on May 1st at 4PM PST.

In brighter news, The Sims 4 releases an update that allows for more trans inclusive looks. Among inclusions like shapewear and hearing aids, this update also includes the usage of binders and inclusion of top surgery scars as a means to reflect the trans members of the player base in an effort to push diversity and inclusion.

But in more bummer news, EA and Respawn canceled a single-player game in the Apex/Titanfall universe this week. Follow up news has reported this wasn’t Titanfall 3, but all the same gamers are bummed at the fact that we can’t just get more of the product multiple people would enjoy.

DICE showed exactly what is to be expected of a modern AAA shooter on today’s EA Play. Whilst several new maps and gameplay improvements will be implemented in the coming months for the Battlefield die hards, perhaps the biggest news of the evening was something that happened the night before: Battlefield V, EA’s premiere shooter franchise, will be joining the publisher’s “EA Access” service effective immediately.

The aforementioned updates that were revealed took the form of intimate looks at two new maps, part of Battlefield V’s “Chapter 4” stage of continuous support. The first shown was Marita, Greece, which is an infantry-focused map that takes place in the cramped streets of a small mountainous European town. Marita is set to be released in July. Coming in June (and confusingly shown second in the actual presentation) was Al Sundan, a large North-African desert focused on open combat and vehicles.

The team at DICE also mentioned that they would be implementing small quality of life features, such as increasing the maximum rank from 50 to 500 to accommodate the most ardent of Battlefield faithful as well as private games.

A palate cleanser between Chapter 4 and 5 followed, named “Operation Underground”. Though they only showed the same half a minute of footage in a loop, it seems to be an infantry focused map taking place in underground train tunnels and the courtyards above the station. This map is expected to be released in October

The Battlefield segment of EA Play came to an end with a preview of what they have planned for the last known stage of Battlefield V support, Chapter 5. This is expected to come in Autumn 2019 and will see the series return to the pacific theatre of World War II. The only confirmed map was Iwo Jima, of which they displayed both a fancy new look as well as footage in location and luscious concept art. Lars Gustavsson, lead designer, promised the return of weapons beloved for fans of the franchise.

Though all that was shown today was suitably impressive and well polished as expected of a production of this calibre, I find it hard to muster any kind of enthusiasm for it. Battlefield by and large has remained the same old faithful for roughly 2 decades, and whilst it will never not be fun to slam a jeep into other squishy human beings, the novelty has certainly worn off. Whether in the tube or a desert, shooting a rifle is shooting a rifle.
