It’s time for Michonskimania as John returns to the hosting chair, joining Scott and Solon in discussing everything from this week in games. John’s been digging hard into the Great Ace Attorney games, Scott’s been playing a bit of Back 4 Blood, while Solon’s jumped face first into the entire Yakuza franchise and Button City.

It’s been a big news week with Super Mario Brothers selling for over 2 million, Capcom showing off the final Street Fighter V DLC character, and Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds adding BattleGrounds to their name to become PUBG: BattleGrounds. We also dig into the deeper stuff with Steve Gaynor’s abusive behavior at Fullbright, J. Allen Brack stepping down from Blizzard, and Unity making it a whole lot more expensive if developers want to put their game on console.

NOTE: There was a lightning storm in Florida during recording, so unfortunately you can hear it at times during the episode.

John and Elvie are here this week for a shorter episode to help get you through an increasingly rough time. PSO2 has finally officially released in North America and it’s an enormous mess, Pyramid Head is in Dead by Daylight now, Elvie’s sleuthing, John’s getting into some Tales, Magic Leap’s undergoing “restructuring” as VR stagnates, Blizzcon got canned, SFV is going to continue to disappoint for a while to come, sometimes your idea doesn’t need to be a game, John’s gotten his hands on the Xenoblade remaster, and Travis Touchdown shits.

Scott and Rose talk through an extensive 40 min tour of Fire Emblem: Three Houses! My heart breaks as the gang ignores the hilarious Platinum the Trinity in favour of Faust, when discussing randomness in fighing games and the inclusion of Hero in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. The gang goes over Street Fighter V announcements, and then talks more about Kage than anyone ever has. We take a plunge into the ever darkening pit of horrible topics because there is RWBY talk! John keeps up updated on post-crash Team Fortress 2. And then Scott curses the very earth with the conception of Binary Domain Gacha!

In case you couldn’t predict it, this week’s Chooch is a very Smash-centric episode, but in addition to that we’ve got all the hot reactions to The Game Awards, the opening of new storefronts on the PC, Soulja Boy’s totally legal new console, Sonic’s piss, Street Fighter V somehow getting even worse, Zack’s Great Idea, and Solon gets in the sauce.

It’s (unfortunately) a Smash Bros. heavy episode of Chooch for episode 228! John forces Solon to sit through an absolutely torturous hour of Smash Bros talk (prompting Solon’s cat to wail in pain much like I am editing), before finally settling into talk on Discord’s storefront, Nintendo’s continued assault on ROM sites, the big EVO news, DOOM Eternal’s reveal, and shoving tennis balls in your mouth.

We’re all well aware of how poorly Capcom handled the launch of Street Fighter V. It was as barebones of a launch as any had ever been, angering everyone except the most hardcore FGC member. As time went on, Capcom put the ship back on course, adding a (terribly written) story mode, a challenge mode that helps you earn in-game currency, and a cast of excellent DLC fighters. Those changes didn’t impact sales in a meaningful way, so Capcom’s decided to hit the reset button on SFV, so to speak.

Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition will include all the content from SFV that has been released thus far, sans costume packs. That means every character from season one and two of the DLC, the story mode, and a host of new features added to this edition. A standard Arcade mode will be added, pitting you against a group of characters from each era of Street Fighter history. There will also be new modes elaborated on in the future, and every character will gain a new V-Trigger skill, changing how they play significantly.

Capcom claimed when SFV came out that you wouldn’t need to ever buy a new disc to get every bit of content, and they’re still upholding that claim. The arcade mode, new modes, and V-Triggers will be added as free updates for existing players, and the DLC characters are available with either fight money or real money right now. Arcade Edition is just a quick way for newbies to get in on the game. Arcade Edition will launch for 40$ on January 16th, 2018.

Day two begins! John, Rose, Niall, and Michael join hands and lend voices to another round of end of the year awards. Wondering how we got here? The podcast links above will take you through our discussions and debates as we determined the winners.

On this day, we run through Best Writing, Best Moment, Scene, or Level, Best Surprise, Hella Broken-est, and Most Disappointing.

Best Writing: VA-11 HALL-A

Runners-up: Orwell, Firewatch

VA-11 HALL-A’s world-building is nigh-flawless. You’re introduced to its characters casually, but their stories are anything but standard. You quickly sink comfortably into the game’s dialogue, since the writing is so believable and funny. There are characters such as Stella, a cat-girl who somehow makes perfect sense, and Dorothy, a character that raises every possible red flag but still ends up as a super charming member of the ensemble, who help not only flesh out the world, but assist in bringing more information about Jill, the main character, out. VA-11 HALL-A is an absolute masterclass in storytelling in general, from characters, world, and humor.

Best Moment, Scene, or Level: The Night in the Hospital (That Dragon, Cancer)

Runners-up: Play of the Game (Overwatch), Pokemon Go Craze

In many ways, it feels wrong to be awarding a scene like That Dragon’s night in the hospital the title of “Best Moment”, but it’s also important to remember that “best” doesn’t necessarily mean “happiest”. There’s certainly nothing happy about stepping into the shoes of Ryan Green as he attempts to soothe his screaming baby son Joel on a long, bleak, lonely night. Games rarely deal in despair the way That Dragon does in this scene; Joel’s screams are blood-curdling, agonizing, and hauntingly real. It’s in this moment that That Dragon ascends beyond merely a loving tribute to a life lost too soon and into something so much more – it strikes a chord with the player in a way that shocks to the core, and it breaks your heart.

It’s more than just a scene in a video game – it takes you out of the real world and places you in Ryan and Joel’s; a world of nothing but pain, despair and hopelessness, and gives you a taste of the worst life has to offer. Almost a year on, and it’s still tough to watch, let alone replay the scene without tearing up. Games as a medium have the potential to make you feel things no other art form can, and that’s why Joel and Ryan’s night is so powerful.

Best Surprise: HITMAN

Runners-up: DOOM, Stardew Valley

When HITMAN was announced, very few of us knew exactly what IO was planning. They talked about episodic content, about a disc release nearly a year after the digital one, and an odd price plan that I was sure would scare everyone away. Oh we of little faith. Turns out IO wasn’t just turning a game episodic for the hell of it, they had designed HITMAN to fit right into it. Each level begs to be played over and over, leveled up, and played again. While we waited for new episodes, elusive targets and escalation missions filled the gaps. HITMAN did what none of us thought it could, pull itself together and become one of the best games of this year.

Hella Broken-est: Batman: The Telltale Series (PC)

Runners-up: Kerbal (PS4), Watch Dogs 2 (PC)

In a year filled with broken ports and broken dreams, Telltale’s Batman stands not as a symbol of justice, but as a symbol of the endless overall frustration involving 2016’s PC ports. Upon episode one’s release in August, an overwhelming amount of players, including at least three members of Chooch, found it was impossible to coerce Batman into running above molasses-level, unplayable frame-rates- if they could get it to launch at all. The game itself only offered two graphics options (“high performance” or “high quality” visuals and the option to switch anti-aliasing on or off), and Telltale’s official statement amounted to “not our problem.” For about five months, Batman remained irredeemably busted, until a patch offering more PC graphics settings was released on December 2nd. However, it came right before the episodic series reached its conclusion, and for some players, the new options still couldn’t solve the problems. This time around, the Bat was broken before Bane even touched him.

Most Disappointing: Street Fighter V

Runners-up: No Man’s Sky, Dishonored 2

Street Fighter V should’ve been a lay-up for Capcom. They’ve already made so many other entries in the franchise, what’s the difficulty in making another? We sure found out, what with its confusing DLC regiments that were often late, the absence of every non-competitive mode, awful story mode art, and the inclusion of a honest to god rootkit in the PC version. Nearly everything wrong with Street Fighter V could’ve been fixed with a little more time in the oven, but Capcom wanted it out for professional players to practice with, undermining ninety percent of their fanbase. Street Fighter V has been out for about a year now, but it still barely feels like a full release AAA game.

At Red Bull Battlegrounds, Akuma was confirmed to be a DLC character in Street Fighter V.

Akuma will be playable at this year’s Playstation Experience in December, and I’d bet money his full release will come very shortly after.

An interesting thing to note is that the kanji on Akuma’s back isn’t his normal one, but rather the one used for Oni Akuma and Shin Akuma. Perhaps he’s a boss, or maybe that’s his V-Trigger?

He doesn’t seem to be a part of season two of DLC, confirming the rumor that another character would be coming by the end of this year. We’ll probably get more information on season two at the Capcom Cup.
