It’s time for another episode of the Gamesline Podcast, This week, John finished up Final Fantasy XIII and started up Hi-Fi Rush when he wasn’t doing all of his daily quests in Multiversus. Lorelai is 100% back on her bullshit going hard on both Rise of the Ronin and Game of the Generation Nioh 2 while also making time for a bit of Stellar Blade.

In the news we cover the Marvelous Games Presentation and the State of Play presentation. Classic game composer Geoff Follin passed away, Take-Two is apparently shutting down a lot more parts of their indie label while Itch.io might be withholding funds from a Gaza Fundraiser. We’re also getting a Tomba port and hey, Atari now owns the Intellivision name.

Sony’s Stream Felt a Bit Weak

Sony held a State of Play on the 30th, going over a few new releases for PS5.

Firewalk, the developer made up of ex-Destiny folks, showed off their new multiplayer game Concord. The gameplay is similar to, well, Destiny PVP, and there will be new cutscenes every week to move an in-universe story along. There will be a beta in July, and the game will launch August 23rd.

God of War: Ragnarok is getting a PC port on September 19th. It’ll have all those PC upgrades you’d expect.

A new Dynasty Warriors is due out in 2025. This time you play as an unknown hero instead of Three Kingdoms legends, which…kinda seems against the point of Dynasty Warriors? Like, that’s half the name. Dynasty. Is Lu Bu even in this?

Infinity Nikki, a new game in the Love Nikki series of dress-up RPGs, looks to be Genshin-like? Elvie is well-versed in these games, so I can’t wait to hear what she has to say about this. A beta test is due in quarter three of this year.

Ballad of Antara is another game from the same team as the Nikki games, funnily enough. It’s due out next year, and while there were some nice visuals, it’s a bit hard to judge anything about it yet.

Skydance showed off their next VR game, Behemoth. They highlighted that they’re the developers of The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, which….seems a bit foolhardy. Is it just us or does every mainstream VR game look like a Skyrim? It’s out late 2024.

Another VR game, this time an Alien game called Rogue Incursion. Not too much to go off of details-wise, but Isolation was good in VR at least. Due out Holiday 2024.

Marvel Rivals, the Marvel PVP shooter, is coming to consoles. There will be a closed beta in July, and the Scarlet Spider outfit for Spider-Man will be exclusive to PS5. Venom, Hela, Magneto, and Adam Warlock were highlighted in this trailer, so I’m guessing they weren’t previously announced.

Where Winds Meet, a game set in Chinese myth, was announced. Lots of cool Wuxia vibes here, could be neat! No release window, however.

The Until Dawn remake got a release window, Fall 2024 for PS5 and PC.

Path of Exile 2 is coming to consoles with couch co-op. Early access will launch in late 2024.

Bloober Teams’ Silent Hill 2 remake looks like garbage go do something else

Monster Hunter: Wilds is out in 2025, and there was plenty of new gameplay. John wrote this up so he doesn’t know anything about these games, so whatever’s new here went over his head. If you have save data from Monster Hunter: World and/or the Iceborne expansion on your console, you get exclusive new outfits for your Palico.

Finally, the new Astro Bot game, just called Astro Bot, was revealed. Due out September 6th, it looks like a fun 3D platformer with plenty of references to Playstation franchises Sony won’t make new games for any time soon.

Updates for Gaming Favorites

Tekken 8‘s second DLC character was confirmed to be Lidia Sobieska, the Polish Prime Minister who packs a punch.

The Limited Run published re-release of the first Tomba game is confirmed to release August 1st for PS5, Switch, and PC. A PS4 version will release later.

Further Failure to Protect the Industry

IGN dug into the Take-Two studio closures, and have found that they wish to either sell or completely shut down their entire indie label, Private Division.

A report from Rascal News has revealed that itch.io has not provided the funds raised for the recent Games for Palestine bundle hosted on their site.

Goodbye to a Legend

Geoff Follin, brother of iconic video game composer Tim Follin, passed away recently from pancreatic cancer. Geoff contributed to less titles than Tim did, but his music include the NES Silver Surfer game and Plok for SNES. Tim announced his passing on Facebook.

And finally, Atari has acquired the catalog and name of their original rivals, Intellivision. It’s unknown exactly what game IPs they now own, or if this does anything to halt or help the Intellivision Amico that’s supposed to be happening.

Sony has wrapped up another State of Play, showcasing a new look at games like Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Street Fighter 6 characters, and further gameplay in the Resident Evil 4 remake.

The newly released Atomic Heart is facing controversy due to its purported pro-Russian connections and security issues in the midst of the continuing escalation of the Russo-Ukraine War. Ukraine’s Digital Ministry has requested the companies Steam, Microsoft, and Sony to remove the game from platforms. Questions have been called into whether or not the game is harvesting data to Russian security forces. The game’s composer, Mick Gordon, has donated his fees made from the game.

Atomic Heart has also come under scrutiny due to an aesthetic that appears to romanticize the Soviet Union and due to its timely release close to Russia’s official invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. This date also coincides with Defender of the Fatherland Day, a holiday that originally celebrated the Russian Armed Forces. Ukraine has otherwise no longer observed the holiday since 1994.

Games Done Quick has officially banned not only Hogwarts Legacy, but also every other Harry Potter video game adaptation from future events. A full list of GDQ’s currently banned games can be referenced and found on their submission guide.

Rovio Entertainment Oyj, best known for the Angry Birds franchise, has decided to delist the original game from mobile platforms—because “it is negatively impacting their other games”, hoping to redirect attention to their other free-to-play titles.

Nintendo is further expanding its reach by having officially signed a contract with Microsoft to now allow previously exclusive Xbox games to be playable on Nintendo platforms.

Sega is increasing the average monthly salary of its Japanese employees by about 30 percent. This increase will not officially take effect until July 2023 of this year.

Studio head of Xbox Game Studios’ Tango Gameworks Shinji Mikami is set to leave the company. Mikami founded the company back in 2010. Tango Gameworks will continue to support Ghostwire: Tokyo and Hi-Fi Rush.

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Super Nintendo World has officially made a grand opening at Universal Studios Hollywood. The themed area’s biggest feature is currently a Mario Kart simulation powered by augmented reality and projection mapping technology. More importantly, you get to hang out with Toad. Super Nintendo World opened in Universal Studios Japan on March 2021, and is currently slated to open Universal Studios Singapore in 2025 with construction underway.

There’s were so many big news drops this week, so this is but a sliver of what was announced. Oh, and non-show things did happen too.

Games Done Quick (GDQ) has withdrawn and canceled what would have been their upcoming in-person event in Orlando, Florida, making a hardline stance against the state’s recent legislative policies. GDQ representatives have spoken against the Florida’s lax COVID-19 policies and anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric present in local legislation that they feel would endanger their group and attendees.

Bonnie Ross officially resigned and left 343 Industries and Microsoft. 343 Industries has worked on several Halo titles since 2007. Pierre Hintze will take over as studio head immediately. 

Square Enix recently partnered with Oasys, a blockchain company, now becoming one of the largest games publishers to invest heavily in blockchain technology.

Genshin Impact is getting some sort of animated project. The adaptation will be developed under Ufotable, who is known for their work on Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba and the Tales and Fate series.

In the tabletop gaming world, Wizards of the Coast has finally filed an injunction against NuTSR for using Wizards trademarks to publish “blatantly racist and transphobic content”. This long-winded legal saga has been going on for years.

Babylon’s Fall will be ending service in February 2023. The game has been online for less than a year.

Also having been active for less than a year, the relaunched G4TV has been hit with huge staff layoffs.

A huge portion of Fanbyte’s staff have also been laid off. The publication has been under Tencent since 2020.

And getting into all of the major show news…

A majority of the announcements made in the latest Ubisoft’s Foward event was all about Assassin’s Creed.

D23 Expo

Huge hardcore Disney heads and investors making bills rain know the D23 Expo is a huge deal, and this year features a substantial amount of games-related announcements from the House of Mouse.

Return to Monkey Island releases on September 19 for the Nintendo Switch and PC. The game will be published by Devolver Digital in will be in coordination with Lucasfilm Games, the latter acquired by the Walt Disney Company back in 2012.

The Sega Genesis Gargoyles game from 1995 is getting remastered. No release date has been determined, but it is slated for release on consoles and the PC.

Disney Illusion Island will be a multiplayer co-op platformer that will release exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. The game is a revisit to a previously canceled title that would have been Metroidvania-like.

Indie studio Bithell Games has been given the green light to help develop TRON: Identity, an adventure-mystery visual novel set to release next year in 2023. The game seems to take place in a new setting that has yet to be explored in the rest of the franchise.

Disney Dreamlight Valley, Disney’s newest online roleplaying game, will have its first major content update revolving around the universe of Toy Story. Dreamlight Valley’s character creator is available and free to try,  in which the character you produce can be imported into the full game.

Somehow, we’re still getting Avatar content in the year 2022, so trust us, Avatar: Reckoning will be coming out eventually. Reckoning is intended to be an online MOBA for mobile devices.

Nintendo Direct

The rumor of the rumor was true: The latest Nintendo Direct wasn’t delayed, but it wasn’t shown live in the UK. Speculation believes it might possibly be due to the The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s sequel subtitle in relation to the recent death of Queen Elizabeth II—

And after much waiting, “Breath of the Wild 2” is officially now known as Tears of the Kingdom. The game will be released in May 2023.

Previous leaks have proven that the stark, red-blue character design of the main character in the upcoming Fire Emblem Engage is apparently real. The game revolves around a mechanic in which you can summon past Fire Emblem characters to aid you in battle.

Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life is getting a remake. The game will be billed under the official Story of Seasons localization trademark for its English-language release. A remake of the GameCube game that came out in 2003, the game will not only feature a significant graphics overhaul, but will now allow you to play a male, female, or non-binary protagonist on top of flexibly being able to woo any of the game’s marriage candidates regardless of gender.

Various Nintendo 64 games are coming to Nintendo Switch Online. Titles like the first Mario Party, Pokémon Stadium, and GoldenEye 007 are included in this lineup.

Tales of Symphonia is getting remastered. The remaster seems to be based on an older PC port and will run at 30 FPS, much to the chagrin of fans who played it at 60 on GameCube.

John is ready to be hurt again because Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE is the new game from Tookyo Games and Spike Chunsoft. Yeah, the Danganronpa team is bringing the band back together for a new mystery solving game. It launches Spring 2023.

Splatoon 3 is having its first Splatfest near the end of this month!

Nintendo Switch Sports will now have golf. But you have to wait.

Pikmin 4 has been confirmed as the next mainline game in the respective series.

And a little more of Bayonetta 3 has been shown.

Sony Playstation’s State of Play

God of War: Ragnarok now has a story trailer.

Tekken 8 has been officially announced. The game is currently being built from the ground up using the Unreal Engine.

Bandai Namco is debuting a new IP called Synduality.

Pacific Drive, the debut game by Ironwood Studios, has now dropped a reveal trailer. Ironwood Studios is based in Seattle, Washington, comprising of a team of developers who have previously worked in AAA.

Accompanying the State of Play’s showcase was the RGG Summit, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s own showcase regarding their studio’s IP, announcing that:

The previously unreleased in the West Yakuza spin-off Yakuza: Ishin is set to release as a remake titled Like a Dragon: Ishin!

Judgment and Lost Judgment are now officially available for the PC.

And finally, Like a Dragon 8 is set to release in 2024. It seems as though that Yakuza series is set to drop the “Yakuza” moniker here on out, following Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Like the seventh game in the series, the game will remain a turn-based RPG. Protagonists Ichiban Kasuga and veteran Kiryu Kazuma are to return.

Oh, you thought I was done? Amazon’s New World is a complete mess, Blizzard officially changed McCree’s name, Blizzcon was cancelled, and Bobby Kotick took a pay cut in a failed attempt at good PR. Far Cry 6 has horrible marketing, Resident Evil had a big week, the Wu-Tang clan are making an RPG and Shoji Meguro is leaving ATLUS to make his own game. Speaking of new games, A Quiet Place is getting a game tie-in from iLLOGIKA, Digimon Survive is now coming in 20222 and ConcernedApe has the Haunted Chocolatier in the works. We’re also getting a new third party DLC character in Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and Melty Blood: Type Lumina‘s DLC Rollout is starting this winter.
