Sony’s Stream Felt a Bit Weak

Sony held a State of Play on the 30th, going over a few new releases for PS5.

Firewalk, the developer made up of ex-Destiny folks, showed off their new multiplayer game Concord. The gameplay is similar to, well, Destiny PVP, and there will be new cutscenes every week to move an in-universe story along. There will be a beta in July, and the game will launch August 23rd.

God of War: Ragnarok is getting a PC port on September 19th. It’ll have all those PC upgrades you’d expect.

A new Dynasty Warriors is due out in 2025. This time you play as an unknown hero instead of Three Kingdoms legends, which…kinda seems against the point of Dynasty Warriors? Like, that’s half the name. Dynasty. Is Lu Bu even in this?

Infinity Nikki, a new game in the Love Nikki series of dress-up RPGs, looks to be Genshin-like? Elvie is well-versed in these games, so I can’t wait to hear what she has to say about this. A beta test is due in quarter three of this year.

Ballad of Antara is another game from the same team as the Nikki games, funnily enough. It’s due out next year, and while there were some nice visuals, it’s a bit hard to judge anything about it yet.

Skydance showed off their next VR game, Behemoth. They highlighted that they’re the developers of The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, which….seems a bit foolhardy. Is it just us or does every mainstream VR game look like a Skyrim? It’s out late 2024.

Another VR game, this time an Alien game called Rogue Incursion. Not too much to go off of details-wise, but Isolation was good in VR at least. Due out Holiday 2024.

Marvel Rivals, the Marvel PVP shooter, is coming to consoles. There will be a closed beta in July, and the Scarlet Spider outfit for Spider-Man will be exclusive to PS5. Venom, Hela, Magneto, and Adam Warlock were highlighted in this trailer, so I’m guessing they weren’t previously announced.

Where Winds Meet, a game set in Chinese myth, was announced. Lots of cool Wuxia vibes here, could be neat! No release window, however.

The Until Dawn remake got a release window, Fall 2024 for PS5 and PC.

Path of Exile 2 is coming to consoles with couch co-op. Early access will launch in late 2024.

Bloober Teams’ Silent Hill 2 remake looks like garbage go do something else

Monster Hunter: Wilds is out in 2025, and there was plenty of new gameplay. John wrote this up so he doesn’t know anything about these games, so whatever’s new here went over his head. If you have save data from Monster Hunter: World and/or the Iceborne expansion on your console, you get exclusive new outfits for your Palico.

Finally, the new Astro Bot game, just called Astro Bot, was revealed. Due out September 6th, it looks like a fun 3D platformer with plenty of references to Playstation franchises Sony won’t make new games for any time soon.

Updates for Gaming Favorites

Tekken 8‘s second DLC character was confirmed to be Lidia Sobieska, the Polish Prime Minister who packs a punch.

The Limited Run published re-release of the first Tomba game is confirmed to release August 1st for PS5, Switch, and PC. A PS4 version will release later.

Further Failure to Protect the Industry

IGN dug into the Take-Two studio closures, and have found that they wish to either sell or completely shut down their entire indie label, Private Division.

A report from Rascal News has revealed that itch.io has not provided the funds raised for the recent Games for Palestine bundle hosted on their site.

Goodbye to a Legend

Geoff Follin, brother of iconic video game composer Tim Follin, passed away recently from pancreatic cancer. Geoff contributed to less titles than Tim did, but his music include the NES Silver Surfer game and Plok for SNES. Tim announced his passing on Facebook.

And finally, Atari has acquired the catalog and name of their original rivals, Intellivision. It’s unknown exactly what game IPs they now own, or if this does anything to halt or help the Intellivision Amico that’s supposed to be happening.

The big talk of the tabletop roleplaying games scene has potentially put the Dungeons & Dragons brand name in big trouble: A leak of a new draft of the Open Game License (OGL) has received widespread negative response and controversy due to the constraining and potentially damaging impact on tabletop games creators due to its terms and conditions. The OGL is a copyright document by D&D IP holder, Wizards of the Coast, that is referenced by many developers and designers to grant permissions to modify and redistribute content of their IP. The wider legal implications of this OGL draft—and how this can negatively impact third-party developers and even content unrelated to Wizards’ own IP—is better explained by a lawyer Noah Downs in layman’s terms here. An official statement in response to the backlash by DND Beyond Staff has officially been published as of today.

Various publishers and competitors to Wizards’ brand have swiftly responded to the OGL leak with their own intentions of dropping OGL projects and creating new games systems based on less binding and non-restrictive game licenses. Publisher Kobold Press’s website has been crashing due to increased interest after the announcement of a project they are currently calling “Black Flag”. Paizo, known for publishing Pathfinder, a direct competitor that originally spawned from Dungeons and Dragons to begin with, has announced a new, system neutral open gaming license. Many have canceled their subscriptions to the D&D Beyond platform, potentially further delaying and causing Wizards’ representatives to scramble over their next move. Wizards of the Coast has been a subsidiary of Hasbro since 1999.

After wrapping up the previous year and reviewing their financial goals, Ubisoft has decided to cancel three previously unannounced projects and is once again, delaying their pirate game, Skull and Bones. Again. They’re delaying it again for the sixth time.

Studio head of Amazon’s gaming division, John Smedley, is making his exit from the company. His leave is possibly attributed to the studio’s ongoing struggles, such as MMORPG New World’s shaky launch.

The 20th Super MAGFest has wrapped up last weekend, and anyone who attended is urged to fill in the show’s designated self-reporting form if they have found themselves COVID-19 positive. Respondents’ personal information will not be shared, but they may receive follow-up questions to inform the appropriate community members and other attendees. MAGStock, a spin on the festival as an outdoor, camping event, is currently still slated to take place on June 8-11, 2023 in Darlington, Maryland.

Bloober Team assures everyone that their own Silent Hill 2 remake is going to be A-ok! When the initial teaser for the remake in development was first released, many viewers already raised concerns about Bloober’s potential direction with the game.

YouTube’s latest profanity policy seems to have taken a bigger, stricter crackdown on cursing across the board.

As of this week, Steam has broken its own records by hitting 10 million concurrent in-game users that were active at a time.

Physical games sales went well in Japan in 2022, while the opposite is true for Europe, in which sales in both the console and PC markets were down.

On the other hand, Pokémon continues to consistently build its own numbers, and the Official Pokémon YouTube channel is celebrating by releasing a video commemorating the franchise’s official milestone in hitting over one thousand Pokémon! Feel old and overwhelmed all at once:

The Silent Hill news includes the additional announcements of several spin-off titles and accompanying media, which include:

Silent Hill: Townfall a game that will be published under Annapurna Interactive and will be developed by No Code. 

Silent Hill f, a game taking place in Japan and to be penned by Ryukishi07, who is most famously known for the creation of the Higurashi and Umineko horror media franchises. It will be developed by Neobards Entertainment.

And Silent Hill Ascension, an interactive and potential livestream series, which will involve the hands of several production companies. Streaming software company, Genvid, J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Games, and Dead by Daylight’s studio Behaviour Interactive will be all involved.

Meta’s Horizon Worlds platform is apparently not doing so hot. The virtual world platform is experiencing significant user drop-off rates, accompanied by various complaints of persisting bugs and missing features. Horizon Worlds has been part of Meta’s attempts in dabbling in the metaverse after taking a major shift in the company’s direction beyond just Facebook.

Discord’s latest major update includes a new feature called Activities. Activities is a further expansion of the Voice Channel feature to now include a selection of games someone can host for a group to play. The latest update also includes more resources for admins and developers, on top of a new entry-level tier to the Nitro subscription plan.

Diablo IV QA testers at Activision Blizzard are now eligible to form a union. The union election is slated for the end of this month.

One of the largest The Legend of Zelda wikis is aiming to go fully independent, breaking away from Fandom, Inc. Fandom had recently absorbed and acquired numerous publications.

Director of the high-octane, action Telegu film hit RRR, S.S. Rajamouli visited Kojima Productions recently. As is with routine with many past guests of Hideo Kojima, Rajamouli has went through a 3D scan, leading to speculation he may be a character in a potential future production.

G4 TV 2.0 is officially dead. The attempt at reviving the network since it’s initial end back in 2014 barely lasted a year.

An upcoming, ambitious, total conversation Fallout 4 mod called Fallout: London has decided to remove what were initially plans for zombie-fied versions of Queen Elizabeth II and King Charles III. The removal close to the mod’s release was in response to the Queen’s death in September.
