It’s a full house this week on the Gamesline Podcast. John is joined by Lorelai, Maverick and Rose to talk about the last week in gaming. John’s still obsessing about Pikmin when he’s not playing Digimon cards or Pokémon Channel. Lorelai was Final Fantasy pilled at the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival which got her playing Final Fantasy XI again while also digging in to Vampire Crawlers on her long road trip. Rose of course played more Marathon, Mina the Hollower, Saros, and Forbidden Solitaire while Maverick played a bunch of Hades 2.

In the news, we go over the interview Mike Fisher gave where he annihilated Yuji Naka, The Witcher 3 is getting more DLC, and a bill addressing the Stop Killing Games initiative is moving forward in California. In other news, Dark Horse Comics is unionizing after their new Embracer overlords started shutting down Things From Another World and shifting focus to Games. If you’d like to sign the petition to support the unionization effort, you can do that here.

A lot of pop culture right now is seeped in nostalgia. I understand why, to an extent. The economy is rough, and new ideas are a bigger financial risk than established ones. The public yearns for a simpler time, which usually just means an era when they didn’t have to pay bills, so people my age and older want to think about the cartoons that were on when they were kids to spark that nostalgia. It’s a coping mechanism, and it’s one humans have used in any time period. Contemporary capitalism has just caught on, and figured out how best to exploit it.

I am not angry about this, even though I’d rather things be different; art can thrive in any condition. I think there have been good revivals that play to the past, and reboots that interpret characters and stories through a modern lens. However, the ones that don’t work are the ones that don’t bother to reinterpret, purely playing the hits instead.

When I played Pokémon Pokopia a few months ago, I knew there would be callbacks to Red and Blue’s Kanto. Folks online had looked at the maps of each area and lined them up with cities in Generation One’s landmass, and the story in-game quickly told me that this was a Kanto, nay, a Pokémon world ravaged by some form of climate catastrophe that left the land bereft of both humans and Pokémon. When the player character, a Ditto that just so happens to be freed from its Poké Ball, begins to rebuild the land, Pokémon return and begin to emulate human society in a hope that people will also come back.

The Pokémon are interacting with the world in a way that emulates the past, yes, but they are also bringing things forward. You aren’t tasked with re-creating the cities as they were before the disaster (you can if you want, but there’s no real guidelines). Instead, the Pokémon are inspired by what they remember from their lives with humans and want to show how capable they are by their own means. They want humans to feel comfortable if and when they return, but the Pokémon have their own needs, and request amendments to the cities to fit their likes and dislikes. The Pokémon are characters in themselves, and many of them act very differently to how people have always imagined them. There’s a reason the valley girl/gyaru Bulbasaur and Southern-drawling Kyogre stand out so much. It’s novel!

If a remake of a game retreads the same roads with little deviation, it is not for those of us actively interacting with the media. It’s there only to court those searching for a cheap hit of nostalgia. Pokopia posits that building on top of a foundation while introducing new things for new inhabitants will still appeal to those returning.

There was a moment about a week into my playthrough where, even though I was already immensely enjoying the game, Pokopia became something special. I had created a good amount of homes in the Withered Wasteland, the starting area where Fuchsia City once stood. I got my little town of Pokémon to around environment level six or seven (shh), which means the residents were on the path to absolute contentment. For the whole game, a unique set of tracks played for each area, mostly original save for the Pokémon Center healing jingle as a common motif.

Suddenly, without drawing attention to it, the music shifted to a new remix of the Fuschia City theme. It took me a moment to realize what had happened, and as soon as I did, I broke into a fit of sobbing. I don’t exaggerate here, I didn’t just tear up a bit, I started bawling. The use of an old piece of music, of setting this game in that first Pokémon world, was artistically resonant and moving. It wasn’t the song itself, even though it is a nice melody and I had memories of it playing in past playthroughs of Kanto titles, but it was more about what was being conveyed in that moment. No longer was this a Withered Wasteland, unfit for people or Pokémon. Ditto had brought life back to this area. This was Fuschia again, but in a new form. Sure, I may be a bit weak to Pokémon as a concept, it has always been a special interest of mine, but this was a use of expectation, subtlety, and the medium of video games that still impresses me. I was initially confused as to why Pokopia was the only big Pokémon release during the series’ 30th anniversary, but it’s not a mystery to me any more.

Compare that to the other ways the Pokémon franchise has celebrated “milestone” anniversaries. We got a game that respectfully and lovingly reflects on the past while stepping into a new territory for the franchise for the 30th. For the 25th, there was the incredibly bare-bones and outsourced Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Okay, we also got Legends: Arceus, which made me feel similarly to how Pokopia did! For the 20th, Sun and Moon on the 3DS were excellent games and a huge step forward for character writing in the series, but this was also when Red, Blue, and Yellow were put onto 3DS Virtual Console at a higher cost than any other Game Boy game on the eShop. I’m not opposed to remakes or re-releases from a moral standpoint, but I will always prefer a new take on concepts over a retread.

The first time Game Freak brought us back to Kanto is still the best, and it’s because of limitations and remixing. In Pokémon Gold and Silver, a limited version of Kanto is explorable, with a handful of areas slimmed down and the gym leaders all at the same power level, as the player can reach any of them at any point. These limitations can be frustrating at times, and Generation Two’s slow level curve is criticized for good reason, but things such as Cinnabar Island’s volcano erupting and forcing the people of the island to a new location does far more to expand the Pokémon world than Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee ever did. It moves the world forward instead of arresting its development to avoid rustling the feathers of those only looking for safe stasis.

When I watched the 1986 film True Stories for the first time a few nights ago, I was immediately enthralled. David Byrne spends an hour and a half talking about the concept of the Texan from as many angles as he can muster, and he loves every single one of those angles. It felt like an episode of Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, but with a bit more affection for its characters. Afterwards I poked around at some of the special features on the Criterion Collection Blu-ray. One that stood out to me as a frustration, a short film called No Time to Look Back, in which filmmakers Bill and Turner Ross travel to the locations where the fictional town of Virgil, Texas was set. The Ross duo drive around and recreate a few shots from the original film, quoting it along the way. At one point, one of them says something like “David Byrne hates nostalgia, but we’re allowed to do this!” Yeah, dude, you are. It’s still really boring! They speak to almost nobody from the area, and when they do it’s either basic platitudes or straight up telling them “we’re visiting because a movie we like was shot here” met with “oh that’s cool” by the locals.

This short’s title is a quote by David Byrne’s Narrator character from the film, said while exploring a mall and commenting on how shopping centers replaced the town square. Comparing this truth to today’s truth of the dead mall and the lack of third spaces notwithstanding, this walks in tandem with how I feel about nostalgia. It is an acceptance of a world moving forward while considering and incorporating the past. It’s an understanding that the world often rhymes and echoes, but letting it fully repeat leads to stagnation. While the Narrator says there’s no time to look back, I disagree. We can look back, but we shall not move back. We must take this information with us to forge the new.

There’s another scene in which the Narrator speaks on revisiting things that holds far more truth to me. “I really enjoyed forgetting. When I first come to a place, I notice all the little details. I notice the way the sky looks. The color of white paper. The way people walk. Doorknobs. Everything. Then I get used to the place and I don’t notice those things anymore. So only by forgetting can I see the place again as it really is.“ What the Narrator posits as forgetting is experiencing something in a new light. It’s novelty, it’s finding something new in something familiar. Creative Pokémon fans prove this every time they make a ROM hack that improves on the original game or creates something completely new in that framework. That same passion is palpable in Pokopia, and it’s why Ditto’s journey means something to me, and a re-release of FireRed and LeafGreen on the eShop doesn’t. I’ve gotten very used to Kanto in that form, and Pokopia finally helped me forget what I knew.

The Gamesline Podcast returns with John, Maverick, and Jackson! John and Jackson are both playing Grasshopper Manufacture’s Romeo is a Dead Man. John also explores Arknights Endfield and older monster tamer games like Jade Cocoon and Robotrek. Jackson supplements Romeo time with 360 classics Tales of Vesperia and Final Fantasy XIII. Maverick talks about his experiences at MAGFest, the Denshattack! demo, and Skate Story and UNBEATABLE.

In the news, Konami legend Shutaro Iida passed away, Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond are out of Microsoft Gaming, EVO is fully bought by Qiddiya City-owned RTS, Bluepoint has been shuttered, and Tencent secretly funded Highguard. A new .hack is coming, FireRed and LeafGreen are for sale on Switch, Nier: Automata will be continued, Xenoblade Chronicles X got a disappointing Switch 2 edition, and ArcSys made some AI generated border bullshit game.

In what has been generally accepted as a “pretty bad time”, 2025 was in fact an excellent year for Gamesline. We brought new folks on, got into a better rhythm of posts, and started live streaming the podcast. I would like for us to continue to grow, and I would like for our articles to get more attention!

Please, if you read this, read other articles by our staff. Share posts and dig deeper into the author’s work. We have been around for a long time, and we have a body of work beyond what you see when you click on the article you got posted onto your Bluesky feed. That’s all I can ask of you, and that’s all I will say. Besides the following, which is my cool badass list of video games that I played and thought were good.

10. Digimon Story: Time Stranger

I told you I liked it!!!!! I told you there were aspects that I enjoyed!!! People on Reddit were freaks to me about this game but who cares. I don’t. Anyway dang, they made a Digimon game that you don’t have to be a JRPG pervert to like. I am a JRPG pervert and this was still easier to get through than the previous games. There were a few fun characters and the combat was enjoyable to interface with! I got to ride around on Diaboromon’s back! I feel more hopeful for the future of Digimon than truly in love with this game, but I still had a good time. The DLC is still a huge letdown so far though.

9. Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army

I will always love interacting with the Shin Megami Tensei universe in all of its forms. A noir-esque detective story set in the Taisho era of Japan? With SMT’s coolest protag of all time (at least top three, Flynn and the Strange Journey Marine are up there)? I’m seated. The combat’s a bit of a mash-fest, but it’s far better than the original PS2 version’s, since it’s based on the updated form it took in the sequel.

Even though its gameplay is a bit lacking compared to other action games, Raidou stands out by telling a story about having pride in your country and not your nation, in which you believe in the people living around you. Going into this, I didn’t know that Raidou was a hero of the people, and that made me love him far more than seeing him in Nocturne and going “woah cool outfit” even though the outfit is REALLY cool. I’m hopeful for another remaster, but I truly want a sequel, to polish what’s here and to tell a new story about why community is worth protecting.

8. Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter

Speaking of community, the Trails series is famous for feeling so alive. I remember starting the demo for this remake of the original Trails game and speaking to an NPC. He was ruminating on asking his crush out, and when I returned to him after a bit of progress, he was in the process of proposing a date. I was able to chart their relationship blossoming and evolving as Estelle and Joshua begin their career as peacekeepers. The duo’s adventures across their home country of Liberl introduce them to a variety of people, and the writing supports that their lives continue to exist outside of their interactions with them.

I enjoy softening up enemies with overworld combat before shifting into turn-based tactics! I love seeing how Estelle and Joshua mature in such a short time as heroes! I love the pacing of the plot that slowly expands the world for both the characters and the player. I need to finish this game completely still, and we need the remake of 2nd at the end of the year to put a bow on the story, but what’s here is strong and I can tell why so many people I know are obsessed with the Trails world. I’m on board now!

7. Donkey Kong Bananza

I have seen a lot of my fellow critics wrestling with their feelings on this game. It’s not deep in the slightest. It’s kinda dumb, honestly, when you think about it for a few minutes. You’re a big ol ape crushing rocks and punching things. You are jumping around and picking up bananas. There’s barely a plot, there’s a ton of nostalgia-bait, and it’s an exclusive on an overly-expensive console released right when America’s economy took a downturn that is only getting worse. Donkey Kong Bananza is a game of excess. But excess rules sometimes. I don’t want a world where people are harmed for the benefit of the elite. I do want a world where people can do dumb shit like buy a game like Bananza without worry. I want the people who make big games like Bananza to be compensated well for their efforts and not rushed. And I want to indulge in a lil nostalgia pandering here and there. JUST SOMETIMES!!!!

Bananza feels good to play, that’s the long and short of it. Running, punching, digging, surfing, every movement option is a joy to use and a blast to master. What was established by Mario Odyssey is improved with Bananza. I know buying a Switch 2 is a hard ask at the moment, even if you have the money, due to lack of exclusives, but damn does this one make a great case for it. This should’ve been the pack-in instead of Mario Kart.

6. Umamusume: Pretty Derby

I am going to skip the diatribe about how evil gacha games are. I know it, you know it, I will still drink that garbage etc etc etc. There is also the layer on top of this that is horse racing, an often inhumane institution that is based around gambling. I would not blame you if you’re unable to divorce any of this from the goofy horse girl game, and it’s good to be aware of it all even if you are, but hey, I still love this game!

Umamusume has an overwhelming amount of personality. A problem with gacha games is how often you can miss out on a character’s writing and inclusion in the story beyond their introduction if you don’t pull them. Uma does a great job of weaving each character into multiple events and into the stories you actually do play so the cast feels consistently full. If you have a favorite, they will keep showing up, interacting with new additions and the original cast in unique ways. The raising sim gameplay is a nice reminder that we need more Monster Rancher in modern times, and I’ve been having a lovely time connecting further with my friends by cracking jokes about dumb things we imagine the horses doing. A gacha game is obviously carried by its cast, and Uma has one of the best in the business.

5. Blade Chimera

Team Ladybug has finally made a Metroidvania without an outside license, and they did a fantastic job. I wrote a whole dang review about this one, and I ate it up like I have every previous game they’ve released. The pixel art is gorgeous and emotive, there’s a ton of flavor in each gameplay interaction, and the weapons are slick and fun to use. There are a lot of mechanics, but they blend very well and don’t feel overwhelming. Blade Chimera is a new classic that I push everyone to check out. I feel a bit bad that I didn’t get around to Shadow Labyrinth this past year, but you all didn’t talk about Blade Chimera, so I’ll call that even.

4. Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition

I only kinda enjoyed Xenoblade X for most of its runtime. I would’ve had it on this list, but we wouldn’t be talking about it in the top five if the new chapter wasn’t there. There’s a lot to love here that was in the Wii U version. Customizing your mech is a blast no matter what console you’re doing it on, and the evolving politics of the various alien races on planet Mira lead to thought-provoking, funny, and heartwarming events. By the end of the original story, there’s a slight feeling of emptiness, a feeling of “where does this story go, was the battle this group of people fought worth the effort?” Luckily, the new chapter answers that question in a big way, introducing a new character, Al, who pushes things forward in ways that feel similar to what I loved about Xenoblade 3. As I was playing X, I initially felt interested in a sequel for more mechanical reasons, but now I am truly excited to see what happens with the characters.

3. DELTARUNE Chapters 3+4

Deltarune is hitting the middle of the story, and normally stories can lack standout events in these sections. Deltarune bucks that trend, introducing characters and concepts that have recontextualized everything you’ve experienced so far. Toby Fox and co. made me feel emotions about a television set. One of the coolest characters this year is a Hammer Bro from Mario but old. The high quality Deltarune has set in the past was easily met with the new chapters, and the rest of the story is going to be difficult to wait for.

2. of the Devil Episodes 0-2

I played episode 0 in 2025, and episode 2 released in 2025 technically. I am going to shout it all out together. Who cares….I do care about how flawless the worldbuilding is in of the Devil. There are articles spread through the environments, and usually these are created to give background to events that aren’t essential. of the Devil expects more from its readers, not only giving you extra points for picking up on the point of articles, but uses the articles actively in the main story. Current events affecting the day to day lives of citizens? It’s like real life!!

I don’t think a single line of text is superfluous in of the Devil. Character beats are built on while exploring environments. Dumb references are used to humanize someone during stressful moments. I don’t want to claim this will 100% be an all-timer off of a half-released game, but so far I am…”all in”!!!!! Like cards. Because they have poker stuff in this one.

1. Pokemon Legends: Z-A

I’M SORRY I’M SORRY I’M SO SO SORRY THAT IT’S A MONSTER COLLECTOR I’M SORRY
What else could it have been? It’s always good when Pokemon does new things, and I think Z-A is the perfect experiment with the formula. More active combat with cooldowns instead of turns is a fun choice, especially for me as a Xenoblade fan. Similar to Xenoblade, I appreciate how well a sense of community is formed within Lumiose as time goes on. The player character’s rise up the ranks not only proves their worthiness to wield Mega Evolution, but also brings perhaps Pokemon’s best cast together. I adore that someone like Tarragon, the local game streamer’s construction worker grandpa, has interactions with the ex-criminal barista Grisham that make sense and add onto both of their characters. I will always, ALWAYS love a game that makes me feel at home with its cast, and Z-A does that every time I run into one of the main crew. It also helps that it retroactively patched up some (not all, you can’t fix everything wrong with X/Y without remaking them or going back in time and not cancelling Z) of gen 6’s story issues. Game Freak is getting better and better at making the Pokemon world feel less like a fake place that exists for RPG mechanics to happen in and more locations that human beings would live in lately, and Z-A is the best example of that.

We begin with a punchy discussion about the September 2025 Nintendo Direct and Nintendo’s place in the industry, then weave into other news items such as developments in the ongoing litigation between The Pokémon Company and Pocketpair, rumors of a new Drakengard project, the Panzer Dragoon II Zwei remake, and the Mega Man Star Force Legacy Collection!

Then, we move on to personal game journals! John’s continuing his Digimon Story quest with the Time Stranger demo, Lilith reports her experiences with Trails SC and Artis Impact, and Nikolas played Sonic Racing Crossworlds!

Edited by Lorelai and Produced by John

Here’s a transcript from Crystal:

Crystal: SCPs and creepypastas are communicated in a digital format, which is why it’s clever to interpret them as Digimon. What other things communicated in a digital format would you like to see reinterpreted as Digimon?

Nikolas: Is that what Digimon are supposed to be? Little mon-ified versions of online ideas and stuff?

John: So. Kinda. Kinda. The one time that they tried to make it very direct was when they did Appmon, and that almost killed the franchise. There is a Digimon in the Appmon franchise that is called Tweetmon, and it is supposed to be Twitter.

Lilith: Is he like a horrible, hateful creature?

Nikolas: Well no, cause he’s named Tweetmon, which is before it got that bad.

Lilith: Let’s not pretend Twitter was anything more than what it was. It was not a fallen soldier, that place was always a shithole.

Nikolas: Yeah, but, you know, very extreme shithole difference.

Lilith: I mean, does it matter if the shithole gives you cholera or gonorrhea? They’re both bad.

Nikolas: They are bad, but hey, the old shithole is one I made friends on. And the new one, all my friends left, so now I just use Bluesky.

Lilith: It always befuddles me—and I know we’re moving off the track of the question in the first place—but I never understand the social media apps, because in general I don’t understand how people form an economy of social interaction. Because odds are, if I talk to someone more than one time in a row in a reply thread, I will think to myself: “And now they’re justified to kill me.” And then I will never speak to them again.

John: I don’t know about that one.

Lilith: Having social anxiety and being an extrovert is really stupid, I’ll have you know.

Nikolas: What I did was just, “Oh, these are people that I’ve talked to, and they reply every so often, I should send them a message in the DMs function of ‘Hey, do you use anything like a Discord that would be easier to talk to you with?’”

And then they either ignore me, and I know I don’t have to pursue them further, or they say “yes” and now I talk to them consistently. And that rocks, I like that. It’s just one message to have to send out, and either you’ve made a friend, or you can just basically tell them “okay, fuck off” in your own brain.

Lilith: See, that’s fair. I, like the black mold in my Steam library, just kind of manifest in people’s servers, and then they struggle to get rid of me.

But, to answer Crystal’s question, things that I think could be subsequently digitized… here’s the thing, I don’t mean to punt straight away, but there is a targeted demographic of cryptids on the internet. Like, dude who exclusively wants to post about trains, or whoever operates very very niche wikis. So, give me whatever it is the Digimon equivalent of someone’s entire vested knowledge catalog of the steam train.

We’re back with another episode of The Gamesline Podcast. This week, John is joined by Maverick and Lorelai to talk about all the games they’ve been playing in the new year. John’s been playing Pokémon: TCG Pocket and Hey! Pikmin when both he and Maverick haven’t been digging into the endgame of Metaphor: ReFantasio. Maverick also bought himself a Steam Deck with what money he had left after dealing with the scam that is american Gachapon. Lorelai has spent her time revisiting games from earlier in the year with Dungeons of Hintenberg, part 2 of Fantasian: Neo Dimension, and a ton of Mahjong in every game that had it. In the news it looks like we’re going to get a Recettear HD, Punch-Out!! just might be dead as a franchise, and the Team Fortress 2 comic has ended.
