Happy Pokémon Day, You Freaks

The latest Pokémon Presents happened on the 27th, with most of the shown updates focusing on mobile titles.

• Pokémon Go will get a crossover event with the latest season of the anime to coincide with its release outside Japan.
• Pokémon Sleep adds the Legendary Beasts to the roster of napping monsters, starting with Raikou in March, with Entei and Suicune coming later.
• Pokémon Masters will add two new pairs: Silver and Shiny Mega Tyranitar and Geeta and Glimmora, plus reruns of older powerful characters and a new photo editor.
• Pokémon Cafe Remix gives the Paldean starters new outfits, new chances to add either Koraidon or Miraidon to your cafe, and the ability to collect Gimmighoul coins for a chance to get Gimmighoul and Gholdengo on your team.
• Pokémon Unite adds Miraidon to its roster, with Falinks and Ceruledge debuting in the coming months.

The final two announcements were the big ones: First, Pokémon TCG Online game gets a new mobile client. They swear it is not going to be NFT-related.

Finally, the next mainline Pokémon title, Pokémon Legends: Z-A, was announced. Players return to Generation 6’s Kalos region for a game supposedly all set in Lumiose City, X/Y‘s central hub. Mega Evolution will also return. Z-A is scheduled to launch in 2025.

So Back to the Bad

Playstation plans to lay off around 900 people. These cuts include staff at Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Guerilla Games, and the complete shuttering of their London studio. Firesprite, another subsidiary of Playstation that saw cuts, cancelled the production of live service Twisted Metal game.

EA has also laid off a large swath of their employees: five percent of their workforce in total. Battlefield studio Ridgeline Games folded into another Battlefield focused team, Ripple Effect, and a rumored Mandalorian game from Respawn was cancelled.

Embracer Group continues to shed weight across their properties. Saber Interactive, developers of the continuously in question Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, reportedly will be sold to private investors for $500 million. There is also talk that Gearbox will be sold as well, with an official announcement due in the coming days. Gearbox recently shifted focus purely to Borderlands games, with a fourth mainline entry and a sequel to Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands still in development.

Maybe Some Good?

Toys for Bob, previously downsized by Microsoft after the Activision acquisition, is going independent. No reports on what this fully entails, but they are attempting to keep an active relationship with Microsoft, potentially meaning they will continue to work on Crash, Spyro, and potentially Tony Hawk titles.

Alan Wake creators Remedy have acquired full control of…Control. The studio purchased the rights to the franchise from 505 Games ahead of the eventual sequel that is still in development. as well as another project codenamed “Condor“, which is a multiplayer PvE spin-off of Control.

In other news…

Stardew Valley also has its own anniversary to celebrate, and ConcernedApe confirm that a 1.6 update to the PC version of the game will be coming March 16.

Critical Role is holding a public open beta playtest of their tabletop roleplaying game, Daggerheart, and playtest packets will be available on March 12.

Terminator: Survivors, an open-world survival game, is set to release this fall.

Nintendo sues the creators of Yuzu, a popular Switch emulator. While emulators have been proven to be legal, Nintendo’s case focuses on Yuzu’s circumvention of Switch game encryption as well as promotion of piracy, as the emulator’s Patreon saw a doubling of profits once Tears of the Kingdom leaked online.

Jen Cohn, the voice actor for Overwatch character Pharah, came under hot water when she called for Palestine to be “freed from Hamas” on a livestream. Her statement, which sidelines the very real genocide being perpetrated by Israel, has led to Overwatch fans calling for the character’s recasting.

Old Becomes New Again

Neopets continues their big relaunch run, which includes bringing back many of their old, classic Flash games that have yet to be converted for the modern age since the end of Flash support.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl is set to get a sequel. From what has been revealed so far, it will include additional characters such as Squidward and Jimmy Neutron, who were absent in the first title.

On the other hand, Immortals Fenyx Rising will not be getting a sequel. Sources say the attempts at a new, Ubisoft IP unfortunately fell flat due to the game’s poor sales. The game originally was going to be called Gods and Monsters but was re-titled, allegedly trying to avoid potential legal trouble that the Monster Energy brand has become aggressively known for.

Powerhouse Animation Studios is back to animating another Castlevania series, this time with Castlevania: Nocturne, a spin-off to the original animated Castlevania series. It will adapt Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and sequel Symphony of the Night.

Accompanying the series’ revival (again), Fortnite is collaborating with Futurama. Fry, Leela, and Bender will be available to play.

In other news…

CD Projekt Red intends on laying off about 100 people. CEO Adam Kiciński comments that the company is going through a “transformation[s]”, and felt that they were currently overstaffed. Those affected will not be immediately leaving the company until some time next year, and that they will be receiving a severance package.

Microsoft has integrated Venmo has a payment option for Xbox payment systems.

Monster Hunter Now, a mobile game collaboratively developed by Capcom and Niantic, is set to come to mobile devices on September 14. Like all of Niantic’s other titles, the gameplay of Now relies GPS technology, and players have to walk around to collect resources and encounter Monster Hunter’s iconic beasts. Despite a recent, significant layoff that also included the cancellation of a couple of titles, Monster Hunter Now remained one of the projects kept under Niantic’s wing on top of continuing maintenance for Pikmin Bloom, Peridot, and the Pokémon Go.

The combined power house of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes continue, with further elaborations made by the latter in regards to confusion that stirred over strike guidances.

Voice actors have chimed in on the ongoing issues that continue on the table, expressing concerns over AI uses of their voices without their consent.

Representatives of the strikes have continued to urge consumers that effective means of supporting the strikes is not through boycott, but by either showing up at local picket lines or monetarily supporting through funds such as the Entertainment Community Fund, Groceries for Writers, and the official SAG-AFTRA Emergency Relief Fund.

What is Even Going On With Overwatch Anymore?

While it has been noticed that the game is now listed on Steam, Overwatch 2 is not igniting the fire that Activision Blizzard is hoping it would in the pro scene, with a recent report indicating the engagement is on the decline.

Teams in the Overwatch League are also voting on a $114 million exit payment, as the League could be faced to make major structural changes by the end of the current season based on a recent Activision quarterly report. Activision also recently laid off about 50 employees from their Esports department.

Meanwhile, Team Fortress 2 had a big summer update: Seals. The Valve shooter has not just introduced a new game mode and about 14 new maps to the game, but a new Player Destruction map that involves the simple objective of feeding Selbyen, a seal, the most amount of fish. Team Fortress 2 appears to be hitting new all-time player peak numbers thanks to this latest update.

In other news…

Neopets is in full force right now marketing their soft relaunch of the name, which includes a revival of the Neopets Trading Card game.

Bandai Namco is planning to open a store in London, the first of its kind outside of Japan. Bandai Namco publishes and distributes various brands such as Pac-Man, Tekken, and game rights to Dragon Ball.

On the other hand, Bandai Namco will be shutting down Gundam Evolution, announced less than a year it has been online. A free-to-play game, sales of the game’s premium content will cease to be available by the end of July, and the final season of the game is still on set to go on as schedule in late October. The game will officially go shutter by the end of November this year.

Roblox is planning on giving developers tools to create subscription models within their experiences. Through this system developers would be given the channels to deliver content in monetized chunks as they see fit, similar to subscription model tools like Patreon. “Experiences” are what Roblox labels the many games, projects, and virtual labs utilizing its platform. Roblox has repeatedly come under fire due to its dominantly young userbase, which critics have pointed out are susceptible to being exploited by its own monetization practices.

Pokémon Go has rolled out a new feature letting players to customize their own Routes. In Go, Players can “record” their paths, choosing a PokéStop or Gym as a starting point. Senior producer Chad Jones says hopes that “the intention that [Routes] becomes a nice addition to how trainers think about their normal play sessions.”, encourage players to curate and exhibit more interesting landmarks in their local areas. Pokémon Go developer Niantic has recently come under fire in a recent lawsuit that accused the company of nurturing “boy’s club” culture, in wake of a recent major layoff.

The upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot has received their first roster of guest characters, which includes comic book characters Omni-Man from Invincible, Homelander from The Boys, and DC Comics’ Peacemaker.

In a surprising development, the girls seem to no longer be fighting, and The Idolmaster and Love Live! idol game franchises will be joining forces for an upcoming joint concert at the Tokyo Dome in December this year. The lineup is slated to feature singers from the different generations of the respective series.

Summer of Strikes

SAG-AFTRA has officially declared a strike. The labor union—which stands for Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists—comprises of a membership over over 100,000 film and television performers. In conjunction with the ongoing WGA (Writers Guild of America) strikes, these work stoppages are likely to upend and cancel a large portion of productions and any new releases in the film and television industry for an indefinite amount of time.

While only a few members of the games industry may be members of SAG and/or WGA, the issues at the heart of the the strikes affect and trickle down to all creative industries just the same, especially when it comes to the ongoing controversy around the uses of AI, entitlements to streaming and digital platform residuals, and overall better work conditions.

The strikes have defined specific limits to ensure participants and supporters do not cross the picket line, but those in pursuit of work may be able to find sources outside of the film and television industry. This however is not clearly defined, especially when the term limits of the Interactive Media Agreement have expired. The agreement provided members better benefits to remote work options, such as dubbing and voice acting—especially for projects outside the sphere of film and television like video games—in the midst of the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when live work was on halt.

For those of you asking, yes, I’ll be attending the SM2 and the MK1 panels at SDCC. I wholeheartedly support the strike and my fellow SAG-AFTRA and WGA members, but the interactive (video game) contract is not a subject of the strike… yet.

Some troupes like Critical Role are continuing their production schedule, despite having members of SAG-AFTRA in their cast such as Matthew Mercer. Many actual play productions do not involve the direct involvement of SAG and/or WGA. On the other hand, other creator-led companies like Dropout have currently halted new production in solidarity with the strike, but have already finished enough work that can pack in a schedule for another year. Several of their own recurring cast members, such as Siobhan Thompson, are member of the WGA.

Talent often crosses over many mediums, and the blurring of these lines is another point of contention in the midst of the strikes, especially pointing to the unnecessary distinctions that have divided animation talent from the rest of the film industry.

Regardless, people can monetarily support participants in the strikes through funds such as the Entertainment Community Fund, Groceries for Writers, and the official SAG-AFTRA Emergency Relief Fund.

A strike for UPS workers is potentially looming as well, which will potentially involve the participation of over 300,000 workers. The strike would potentially last about 10 days, and can potentially make a negative economic impact of over $7 billion.

In good news, Sega of America’s union election has ended in victory for the union, with the 91-26 vote cementing them as the largest multi-department gaming industry union.

The Microsoft Bidding Battle (Continued)

It’s beginning to look like Microsoft’s bid to buy Activision might go through. The US Federal Trade Commission’s attempt to block the sale was shot down by California Judge Jacqueline Corley, and the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority has extended their deadline for their review on the situation until August 29th. Microsoft has reportedly offered to sell aspects of their cloud gaming business in Europe, which was the major hang-up the CMA had with the sale.

The FTC is appealing the decision, but it will most likely not move further. There is also the fact that Corley’s son works for Microsoft. (Knowing how this country works, who is to say if anything will come out of that!)

Other Bad Behavior and Some Bye’s

Niantic, developers behind Pokemon GO, have been accused of hosting a “boy’s club” culture at the studio by former employees, according to a new lawsuit. The Jane Doe accuser in the lawsuit claims she was underpaid compared to men who she had a higher job title than.

Two voice actors who worked on Genshin Impact, Corina Boettger (Paimon) and Brandon Winckler (various voices), have reported on large amounts of pay owed to them from the game haven’t appeared.

Hoyoverse, creators of Genshin Impact, have replied, claiming the pay was in fact sent to the actors’ recording studio, Formosa Group, who was then supposed to pass the payment onto them. While Hoyoverse is saying they are looking into alternatives to compensate those with withheld pay, Winckler says he will no longer work on the game unless it becomes union work.

The person who was accused of swatting Ubisoft Montreal’s offices in 2020 has been identified and sentenced to three years of community service. Yanni Ouahioune was allegedly mad that he was banned around 80 times from Rainbow Six: Siege.

TinyBuild Games, publisher of titles such as the Hello Neighbor franchise, is under fire for claiming to use AI to find toxic and slacking employees at the studio. CEO Alex Nichiporchik has said that they aren’t using the technology in that way, but instead brought it up as an example of good and bad uses of AI, whatever that means.

The Borderlands movie, a film everyone totally wanted, has been in post-production hell for quite a while. Now, one of its writers, Craig Mazin, has replaced his writing credit with a pseudonym. This does not bode well for the quality of the film, which was test screened last year and did so poorly, that reshoots are still being done to this day. Mazin has recently made a name for himself with the Chernobyl mini-series, but he also put his name on Scary Movie 3 and 4. You be the judge here.

18+ developer Illusion, creator of games such as Koikatsu Party, VR Kanojo, and other, far more other infamous and controversial eroge games, is shutting down and ceasing sales on August 18th. No direct reason has been listed, but it’s been generally accepted that their games were very widely pirated, which led to low sales.

Microsoft’s in-house hype man Larry Hryb, also known by his gamertag “Major Nelson”, is leaving Microsoft after twenty years. Hryb was seemingly part of a recent wave of layoffs in the sales and support sector. His XBox podcast is supposedly only going on hiatus, and where he’ll be heading next is unknown.

New Games and New Mediums

EA Games has opened a new studio, Cliffhanger Games, to work on a new Black Panther title. Cliffhanger is made up of ex-Halo, Call of Duty, and God of War devs. This is a separate game from the Skydance Black Panther and Captain America game announced last year.

Athough not overshadowing its American chapter’s union victory, Sega has greenlit a new “blockchain-based game” in one of their successful franchises. No word on specifics on what IP that specifically is, but with how popular the blockchain is now, we’re sure it’ll crash and burn.

Final Fantasy XVI is being adapted for stage as a musical. The stage show will be held by the Takarazuka Revue company, who is famous for having women perform every role.

Limited Run Games hosted their own E3-style showcase again this year, and they announced a variety of new titles as well as new ports of old games. Highlights include the Zelda CDi-styled Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore, a title in the style of Mischief Makers called Double Shake, a finished version of the previously cancelled Shantae GBA game, and new ports of Clock Tower and Tomba.

The lowlight was the apparent porting of the first three Gex games. It is, unfortunately, tail time. The full showcase can be watched below:

Sonic Central

Another year, another Sonic Central presentation to talk about all things Sonic new and old, commemorating the birthday of blue blur on June 23:

Sonic Origins Plus is now available to play, and Amy’s classic design too!

Sonic Frontiers will get new free content, such as new moves and a New Game+.

Sonic Prime returns for another season on Netflix, alongside with a new mobile game of the series that will be published under Netflix Games.

A plethora of various Sonic merchandise was also shown off during the presentation, from apparel to toys. San Diego Comic-Con this year will have a popup Sonic the Hedgehog-themed restaurant. And a third Sonic movie is definitely on its way!

All of this is timed with the Sonic Symphony World Tour kicking off, beginning in London. The tour will be proceeding to take stops in the cities of Paris, Los Angeles, Sau Paulo, Tokyo, Boston, and Chicago.

Cutting Ties

Niantic is closing its Los Angeles studio, laying off over 200 employees. The Pokémon Go has unfortunately not been doing so hot lately, in which support for the just recently released NBA All-World will be ceasing and development for a prospective Marvel: World of Heroes is canceled. Company founder John Hanke explains that the company has not been seeing the revenue it needs to meet its expenses and will instead be honing in on focusing on its current library, which still includes Pikmin Bloom, Peridot, and Monster Hunter Now. 

Unity cuts ties with Atlas 3D Asset Creator with accusations that it has been sourcing from AI-plagiarized assets. Meanwhile, Steam specifies that it won’t allow games that use copyright-infringing AI assets, and policies regarding the matter still seem to be under review. 

A recent Skullgirls update edits and alters some artwork to remove and reduce fanservice and Nazi-approximate imagery. 

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, developer of the Yakuza and Like a Dragon games, appears to have scrubbed the credits of multiple staff members in the GOG release of several Yakuza titles. 

Activations, Aggressive or Otherwise

Barbie is everything, and that includes being a gamer girl! Accompanying the marketing of the upcoming Barbie movie directed by Greta Gerwig, Xbox has collaborated with the Mattel brand to release a series of limited designed controller plates and a console deck inspired by the Barbie Dreamhouse.  There is also a special bright pink Xbox with “Barbie” plastered on it.

Annupurna Interactive announces Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth, the first new video game incarnation as part of the Blade Runner IP in a long while. 

A internal memo leaked suggesting that Microsoft almost considered acquiring Bungie and Sega. Microsoft is still currently pending for approval in its acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, and Canada’s Department of Justice has chimed recently on the deal, saying that the purchase “is likely to” lead to less competition in the gaming industry.

E3 2023 is canceled. Following a trickling of waves in which numerous major developers have announced their intentions to pull out of the show, one by one, the Entertainment Software Association concluded that this year’s E3 “did not garner the sustained interest necessary to execute it in a way that would showcase the size, strength, and impact of our industry.” Some figures are happily reaping this opportunity. E3 was folded under ReedPop in 2022 last year.

That is not the only thing that is getting the plug pulled, as Player First Games has decided to take MultiVersus offline, anticipating to relaunch it next year. This has understandably met the ire of many, paired with the confusing messages of whether or not the game was in “beta” this whole time—despite the fact that MultiVersus had readily purchasable microtransactions upon release and a “Founder’s Pack” billed at about 100 USD.

The Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops have officially shuttered. As of today, any previous purchases made in the eShops are still re-downloadable, but no new purchases can be made. There are many digital-only titles still currently not legally accessible outside of these venues, and Nintendo has yet to provide any intentions to bring them elsewhere.

Electronic Arts has laid off about 6 percent of his staff. This is estimated to be about 800 employees affected.

Pokémon GO is facing criticism and call for boycott by its playerbase due to new changes to the Remote Raids mechanic, accompanied by pricing increases. Remote Raids were introduced in the midst of the total COVID-19 lockdown measures that were taken when the pandemic first started, meant to accommodate gameplay to ensure players do not have to be at a physical location to participate. In the game’s next update, Remote Raids will be nerfed, and prices to participate will be raised among other features. As of now, Niantic has no plans to revert these changes.

The Game Developers Conference 2023 has closed out about last week and is followed up by a disturbing series of reports that allege incidents of sexual assault and harassment that have occurred at off-site events. The event saw an attendance of about 28,000 people. Guy Blomberg, vice-president of video game PR agency Stride, notes that he has been informed of one such grouping of instances occurred at karaoke even his company hosted. As of this date, the San Francisco Police Department has issued a statement stating that no reports have been filed.

Every year, there are stories about groping, drugging, harassment, and even more stories of countless attempts to create opportunities for assault at games industry events like #GDC23. It's heartbreaking and infuriating that this feels so normalized…

President Biden is invoking the Defense Production Act for circuit board production. Although the move is primarily motivated by mobilizing the technological sector of national defense, it may possibly impact the supply chain and boost domestic production of effects that would benefit various electronics and technologies as a whole.

Vampire Survivors wins Best Game at the BAFTA Game Awards. God of War Ragnarök ended up becoming the most awarded game title in the show’s history, taking home six awards.

An upcoming itch.io bundle is seeking titles to raise funds for the National Organization for Women and the Center for Reproductive Rights in light of the recent overturning of the landmark Roe v. Wade decision by the US Supreme Court. Submissions are currently open. Another bundle, officially partnered with itch.io, is also open for submissions.

Reaching out to and supporting local, on-the-ground, abortion funds is also an efficient way to help, especially in areas where it is needed most.

Various game developers have resounded their own statements in wake of the decision, with varying degrees of both implicity and directness. Bungie intends on covering the travel fees of employees who need to seek services outside of their based location. Other companies like Certain Affinity and Microsoft have also expressed the same intentions as well.

Quebec has officially adopted Bill 96, a new piece of legislation that seeks to tighten rules in order to reinforce French as the official language in workplaces and government offices. The bill is xenophobic and discriminatory, and will shut out many prospective employees from jobs, such as many games developers entering the industry, all while the province is already dealing with a huge labor shortage.

Duolingo’s CEO has also asserted that they are more than willing to move company headquarters from Pennsylvania if local state legislation changes. Although abortion currently can still be legally performed in Pennsylvania, it does not have secure laws in place protecting it compared to its neighboring states in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Head of Xbox Games Studios Matt Booty asserts that there is no crunching at Bethesda. The statement is in response to a comprehensive report by Kotaku that chronicles Fallout 76’s messy development.

Mojang can now block and ban players in private and personal Minecraft servers upon moderator review. These changes are reflected in Minecraft’s latest update.

Blizzard can’t help but keep continuing to acquire other companies to support its own IP.

Meanwhile, Activision Blizzard workers have released a series of demands, asking leadership be held accountable for the issues of sex and gender discrimination that have occurred at the company. The Worker Committee Against Sex & Gender Discrimination is also made up of a former employees.

The Communications Workers of America (CWA) has officially approved of Microsoft’s acquisition of the company. Microsoft has since signed a labor neutrality agreement vowing to recognize the union shop’s rights once the acquisition is complete.

Niantic has canceled several upcoming projects and laid off more than 80 employees. The studio has sadly failed to deliver on the same success they had since Pokémon Go. Harry Potter: Wizards Unite had shut down in January this year.

A weird, crypto-incorporated spinoff of itch.io called w3itch.io called has launched. Or at least is attempting to. The site was quickly scrutinized, and what was most concerning about the project is that it directly ripped off actual listings and projects on itch.io without the creators’ knowledge, on top of listing other game titles that already exist on other platforms.

A Persona 5 Joker and Crow shipping fan zine recently came under heat when one of its moderators was found to have been embezzling its funds. About 27.6k CAD was stolen from the project and allegedly a huge portion of it were specifically spent on gacha rolling in Genshin Impact. The moderator in question has been completely removed from the team.

The previous tensions that were occurring between Gianni Matragrano and John St. John have been resolved.

There was apparently going to be an Epic Donald game.

NieR Automata: The End of YorHa Edition is announced for October 6 on the Switch.

Doom RPG, recently highlighted by Stop Skeletons From Fighting, has been ported to PC!

Pokemon Smile is some form of tooth-brushing app for children. The Pokemon convince the children to brush their teeth and let you catch Pokemon and wear them as hats while you brush your teeth.  The app is out now, so get brushing kids.

Pokemon Cafe Mix is a puzzle game with a cute art style. Players mix around icons of Pokemon to connect them and create chains. Pokemon join the staff of your cafe and give you new abilities to use during gameplay. Personally the puzzles seem extremely haphazard, but I’ll have to get my hands on it to see how it feels. Cafe Mix is launching on June 23rd for Switch and mobile devices.

Pokemon Snap is back! Bandai Namco is developing New Pokemon Snap, and different Pokemon are going to be available for photos all over a new island setting. Not many details were revealed, as it’s still being developed, but there were tons of Pokemon, which is great! I do hope this time the game is expanded and isn’t something you can beat in two hours, or at least only costs a few dollars if so.

Pokemon Go is getting an update to add Mega Evolution sometime this year. Not much else was mentioned but that’s kinda all you need to know.

The show ended by saying another Pokemon Presents will happen on the 24th of June, with promise of a “bigger” announcement. Honestly, if Diamond and Pearl remakes were getting announced, it’d probably be there.
