I know I’m not the first – and likely not the last – to say this, but 2018 was a real lackluster year for games. As the title of this post implies, I had a lot of trouble deciding on ten games that really blew me away this year! There were plenty of games I had a lot of fun with – but they didn’t wow me like a GOTY candidate should. A big reason for this, of course, could be that I didn’t get a chance to play some of 2018’s indie masterpieces, like Celeste. Oops! I’ll likely be spending 2019 playing catch up, grabbing the fantastic indie titles I missed this year. Which means, uh, look forward for my 2019 GOTY list, where I’m also unable to pick out ten games, due to only playing games from the prior year! But that’s a whole year away, and for right now, I’ve got five titles that I’ll likely still be playing well into next year:

5. Dragonball FighterZ

I’ve said the same thing about DBFZ all year: it’s the fighting game that will save the dying genre. It’s yet to be seen whether that’s the truth, but I stand by DBFZ as a perfect game for beginners. The skill floor is low enough to not overwhelm a first time player, while the skill ceiling is high enough to keep professional play exciting for spectators. It’s one of the best feeling fighting games and one of the most well known IPs in the world, making it the perfect fighting game for everyone – something that the genre I love desperately needed. Plus, you can play as a team of three god damn Gokus.

4. Sea of Thieves

Sea of Thieves is one of my absolute favorite multiplayer experiences of all time. While it began its life with very few things to do, the later addition of several free content packs and seasonal events has kept the game fresh. The ebb and flow of the game’s pacing really lends itself to the experience in my opinion. The lull in activity as you sail from point A to point B helps to emphasize the excitement when a galleon full of players sails up to try and steal your goodies. Despite only owning this game for a couple of months, my friends and I have lost dozens of hours sailing about, collecting treasure, and ruining some poor, anchored crew’s night by sailing up and stealing their treasure for ourselves before they can get back aboard their ship.

Or, as pictured above, having our ship blown to smithereens as we piled all the loot we could carry onto a dinghy. My three crewmates played a jaunty tune as I rowed us to the nearest outpost, with only the vaguest idea of which direction I needed to head in. This incident concluded with a friend abandoning the rowboat to respawn our galleon, sailing solo to find us adrift at sea. The entire endeavor took almost half an hour, and we were crying with laughter for just about the entire experience.

3. Frostpunk

If you know me, you might know I love city builders. I live for the relaxing experience of watching something I plot out come to life. But I went into Frostpunk unprepared for just how much it would absorb me for the entire length of its initial three scenarios. Every single time the temperature dropped, I had the same thought – this is it. I’m going to lose here. But nevertheless, my meager colony persevered through the harsh, endless winters. The push and pull of anxiety and relief was endless. Every single time I thought I had things under control, it all went wrong. As soon as I had a steady supply of coal, producing more than I burned, a group of survivors would stumble upon my city, looking for a home – thus requiring me to expand my generator’s heating range further, doubling coal consumption. Along with that, suddenly I’ve got more mouths to feed. But, oh! New survivors means new workers to produce these resources. The cycle of tension and relief, as well as the beautiful aesthetic and dramatic, orchestral score by Piotr Musial delivered an experience no other city builder game has been able to capture, and it kept me coming back for more – especially with the late addition of an endless survival mode.

2. Katamari Damacy Reroll

Is this cheating? Is it cheating to throw in a 1:1 remake of a game that’s almost 15 years old? Maybe. Is it cheating to throw in a game that came out only a couple of days before we deliberated GOTY? Maybe. Does that matter to me? Absolutely not. Katamari Reroll is a near flawless recreation of 2004’s Katamari Damacy, one of my absolute all time favorite games. I adore Damacy, and I absolutely love this remake just as much. If you haven’t played Katamari, pick up this remake. It’s a perfect game. Lonely Rolling Star makes me cry almost every time I hear it. I love Katamari so much.

1. Spider-Man

It’s been a long time since a game had me immediately coming back for more like Spider-Man did. The act of swinging through New York alone was completely therapeutic for me. Paired with the smooth combat, it was almost impossible for me to put down. Sure, the story isn’t perfect, and Spidey sounds like a real cop sometimes, but Spider-Man is one of the few superheroes that really lends himself to a fantastic gaming experience, and it’s a shame so few Spidey titles have come close to nailing it like this game does. When people refer to games as escapist fantasy, the one that will always come to mind from this year is Spider-Man – because almost no game has captured the feel of being truly spectacular like Spider-Man has.

It's Day One of Game of the Year!

It’s the end of another long year in video games, and that means it’s time to dole out plaudits to the games that made a positive impact on our lives in 2018, as well as dish out some scorn to those that brought us misery, frustration, and pain. We’ve got our handy video-guide to the big winners on Day One, but you can also check out our full write-ups for the more in-depth low-down.

We kick things off on day One of Game of the Year with our awards for Best Music, Audio, Visuals, and Presentation.

Best Music: Deltarune

Runners-up: Celeste, Xenoblade Chronicles 2

Toby Fox’s familiar music style is readily available in Deltarune, continuing to be a pleasant treat and easily enjoyable for anyone into Undertale’s soundtrack. Although a number of tracks are slight remixes of songs from Undertale, the foundation of that game’s soundtrack in the form of musical leitmotifs and repeated callbacks aren’t present. Instead, tracks are more immediate and tend to feel more active, with flair and upbeat energy throughout. You’re no longer partaking in an adventure by yourself; you’re leading that adventure forward with others. The music does a great job to reflect this, even if the difference doesn’t make itself too evident. No matter how long it takes for the rest of Deltarune to come out, the music for its first chapter already makes a lasting impression as the best of 2018.

Best Audio: Tetris Effect

Runners-up: Celeste, Wandersong

Tetris Effect was a stirring experience right near the end of 2018, and it may be hard to put a finger on exactly what was so affecting about it- well, actually it isn’t. It’s the sound design. Without any kind of interesting narrative or metagame implemented, it would have been just another Tetris, but this game is carried entirely on the back of an incredible sound palette that evolves as you play. All of your most important button presses add new colors and emotions to the evolving soundscape, and it’s hard to tell how far you’ve come in a level until the next level begins and you are left with a new blank canvas of silence to work from.

My favorite level is this snowy level that I always call Disney’s Frozen 2: Would You Like To Build A Russian Snow-wall? -it starts with nature sounds of wind and snow crunching underfoot and then builds into the game’s distinct pulsing EDM with really satisfying transitions and hooks that feel like you are climbing a big faux-Disney-Tetris-mountain. Although, we really could have done with a more sensitive approach to the “World” tracks that end up largely reducing continents of people to the sounds of tribal chanting, the sounds of Tetris Effect transforms a well-beloved classic into something entirely new and unheard of before.

Best Visuals: Forza Horizon 4

Runners-up: Return of the Obra Dinn, Lucah: Born of a Dream

There’s no denying that Forza Horizon 4 is absolutely gorgeous – Though there are plenty of beautiful, scenic vistas for you to scope out while zooming around, and four seasons with their own distinct and beautiful looks – the real winner for Horizon 4’s visuals is the ability to design liveries for vehicles. The possibilities within the engine are virtually limitless, and with an insanely creative and talented community at Forza’s core, the dream of driving around the UK in a Lamborghini covered with pictures of your favorite Touhou character is more accessible than ever. The creativity of Forza’s community is practically infinite, and while I don’t understand just how these talented folks managed to create a perfect image of Hatsune Miku for every type of vehicle, I absolutely appreciate how easy it is to import these decals, and make a lifted pickup truck with pictures of the virtual idol all over it.

Best Presentation: Dragon Ball FighterZ

Runners-up: Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion, Deltarune

Everything about Dragon Ball FighterZ oozes Dragon Ball – down to the admittedly silly choice for a title. The faux 2d visuals, the absolutely iconic sounds, and the pure love for the game’s source material create a fighting game that goes even further beyond. Pair this with an incredibly easy-to-grasp control scheme, and you’ll be flying around the stages recreating classic moments in virtually no time – especially with the Dramatic Intros and Finishes, providing an ingame recreation – or re-imagining – of famous moments from the anime. Dragon Ball FighterZ presents an experience unlike any other ensuring that when it all comes together, you feel like you are Goku.

It’s (unfortunately) a Smash Bros. heavy episode of Chooch for episode 228! John forces Solon to sit through an absolutely torturous hour of Smash Bros talk (prompting Solon’s cat to wail in pain much like I am editing), before finally settling into talk on Discord’s storefront, Nintendo’s continued assault on ROM sites, the big EVO news, DOOM Eternal’s reveal, and shoving tennis balls in your mouth.

Like a broken bucket, this year’s E3 keeps leaking show secrets. A picture of what looks to be an order form for Nintendo event materials was posted anonymously on 4chan before spreading around twitter, posted by Twitter user @AAMARMO . It features logos for a number of switch games, some known about and some yet unannounced. An article from Destructoid supported the leak, saying that they had received prior confirmation for numerous titles on the list, and believe it to be real.

The list includes previously announced games Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, Ubisoft’s Starlink Battle for Atlas, Fifa 19, and Mario Tennis Aces. More surprisingly, the image shows switch ports of Dragonball FighterZ, not-overwatch-clone Paladins, and some game called…Fortnite? Who knows what that is. Finally the image also features some brand new unannounced titles, including Overcooked 2, a sequel to the popular couch co-op cooking game, as well as Killer Queen Black, seemingly based on the wild as hell 10-player arcade game Killer Queen.

This E3 is shaping up to be an interesting show, provided we don’t hear about everything before it even starts.

We try not to traffic in too many rumors because all rumors should be eyed with a heavy level of skepticism. Even when the stars and planets seem to align and confirm everything we read, or we just really want them to all be true, everyone should treat rumors warily. These rumors fall directly in the “we hope these are true” category.

According to the leaker who posted this information on Reddit, a former Bandai Namco employee gave them a bunch of information. This user is known for posting leaked information on Reddit and some in the community actively try to remind people that not everything the poster says is true. As with all leaks, even if the information is accurate, things can rapidly change. So I’ll leave it up to you to decide if this person is doing this for attention, or passing along real information.

DBFighterZ:

Season one’s DLC leak may have been confirmed with the announcement of Broly and Bardock as the first wave of new fighterz. This leak suggests season two’s lineup is already locked in and will include: Roshi, Videl with Great Saiyaman, Raditz, Zarbon, Kale with Caulifa, Cabba, Tapion, and Gogeta. If this leak is true, all of season one will be out by July, possibly meaning season two would be done by the end of the year. It’s wonderful to see more women “fighterz” in the mix but we’ll all have to hold our breath for Mr. Satan in season three.

SoulCalibur 6:

The finished game will have a total of 22 characters with six others added in DLC. The main roster will include “Hwang, Talim, Grøh’s adoptive father is named Friderich, Maxi’s lover named Jacker…and Roronoa Zoro from the One Piece anime/manga as the guest character.” The DLC will also include another female guest character but no confirmation about who that person could be, or what kind of media they’ll come from. There’s also an intense amount of story tidbits tossed in but anyone who can explain the SoulCalibur story to me is hard to find. There also seems to be some mix up about which characters will slip into the DLC pack and which will make the main roster. Even in rumors the ground is never firm.

One Piece World Seeker:

Just some light details about a game we knew existed. Supposed to be released December of this year, with customizable character costumes and DLC costumes from Dragon Ball, Naruto, Tekken, Final Fantasy, My Hero Academia, and others. The game looks open world, according to the brief trailer they put out, so maybe this will resemble the Dragon Ball Xenoverse game in design.

Anime Game Roundup:

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure has a single player game in development for the Nintendo Switch in the works. Coming from the Naruto Ultimate developers CyberConnect2, this JoJo title is only in pre-production. Considering how early on this title would be, I wouldn’t expect much out of this rumor for awhile. CyberConnect2’s games are often over the top, absolutely gorgeous, and a good mix of style and gameplay making them a perfect choice to develop a JoJo’s game. Rumor or not, this is possibly one of the more exciting tidbits out of this entire information dump.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3 is not currently in development. However a Dragon Ball (no Z) action RPG is being worked on but no additional information is offered. Seems strange to ignore a hit series of games like Xenoverse to make something from the much less popular Dragon Ball anime/manga. But I do like risks and if I’m the only one freaking out about a Dragon Ball game months from now then so be it.

Finally Bandai Namco has supposedly acquired the rights to develop games for several popular anime franchises. Having the license to make a game, and actually completing the work and releasing that game are two very different tasks. So even if this rumor is true, and Bandai does have these licenses, don’t expect a game from every single anime on the list: Yuri on Ice, Kakegurui, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, Tiger Mask W, and Kuroko’s Basketball.
