Although Marvel has primarily focused on cornering the mobile market with their super-powered stable, it seems they’re making moves back into the console realm. At E3, we had a quick taste of Spider-Man doing whatever a spider can at Sony’s conference. Now, Marvel has announced a multi-game partnership with Square Enix, who will kick off the new union with a title currently called The Avengers Project.
This first game in the ambitious team-up is under development at Crystal Dynamics, with help from Eidos Montreal. Not many details are out about The Avengers Project, but the press release promises “a completely original story” players can enjoy “for years to come.”
The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise. Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come.
The trailer which accompanied the blurb was equally vague, with iconic pieces of Avengers equipment in states of disarray. Not to make bets, but the smart money’s on a narrative about the Avengers being disassembled (again) and needing to reunite against some kind of threat. Further details are due out 2018…E3, anyone?
Between this announcement and the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, the comics giant is taking strides to jump back into console markets. However, there’s another picture being drawn here. Marvel being bought by Disney, and then a partnership with Square Enix? We’re definitely going to see The Avengers fighting Sephiroth come Kingdom Hearts III.
