Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo, passed away Saturday apparently due to “a bile duct growth.” The letter from Nintendo can be read here. Iwata was 55 years old and his passing comes as an unexpected shock.

Prior to his position at Nintendo, Iwata worked at HAL Laboratory where he worked on well-known games such as Earthbound and the Kirby series. He has also had a hand in the Legend of Zelda, Mario, and Animal Crossing series. Iwata’s passing leaves behind a hole in the world of video games and he will be deeply missed.
