At the yearly “Minecon” event, Mojang announced that the semi-recent Minecraft “Realms” server feature would now support play across any platform, from Xbox, to smart phone, to PC.

This means, given that you and your friends are all using “Realms”, you’ll be able to play together regardless of the device you’re choosing to play it on. This has its caveats of course, as “Realms” only supports up to ten players at a time, and also requires a paid subscription service, which runs for around $7.99 per month.
Regardless, it is good to see more games open up to the idea of cross-play, as consoles become more and more of a nebulous concept over the years, its nice to be able to play more games across the console lines with friends who might’ve gotten that Xbox One instead of a PS4. Curiously, the original tweet announcing this feature was deleted, and reposted but without the originally attached image, which included a PS4 controller.
While it could be a little conspiratorial, given how Sony has been responding to developers asking for specific features to cater specifically to their games as of late, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see the PS4 skip out on this feature.
Whenever Mojang reveals more information about how this cross-play will work, we’ll update you with more information.
