After a very successful beta Blizzard has shifted their focus to the release of Overwatch. To prepare for that they have a released a statement on their forums stating that anyone found cheating will be permanently banned from the game. No cheater severs, no longer wait times, just one and done.

What is considered cheating seems to be focused on outside sources such as aim-bots and other third party software. Blizzard explained their reasoning in their statement:

“Not only does cheating undermine the spirit of fair play that all of our products are based on, but it works to diminish the fun and enjoyment of others.”

This is not new for Blizzard. They employed a similar policy after the release of Diablo 3, which was plagued by cheaters in its early days. These problems get worse when it comes to competitive first person shooters.

I hope there is some nuance to this and that Blizzard isn’t just going to be banning every name that gets reported or this could turn out very bad. If care is put in then this could make the end product more enjoyable for everyone.
