When’s the last time you remember Atari being in the news? Was it when they published the underwhelming Alone In The Dark: Illumination? Was it when the gaming community had a collective sigh over the Roller Coaster Tycoon World pre-alpha footage? Regardless, there hasn’t been any kind of, uh, hype, around Atari for the last few years. Thankfully, Atari is going back to their beloved roots by publishing a 100 game compilation of arcade classics called Atari Vault.

The package is due out on Steam this spring and so far is confirmed to include well-known fare like Centipede, Missile Command, Asteroids, Warlord, and Tempest. It won’t just be ports though- the games will have online multiplayer and Steam leaderboard functionality. They’ll also support the Steam controller, which according to the press release, will offer “precision control,” presumably emulating the trackball originally present on games like Centipede.

No word on a price or an exact date, but the package will be shown off at this year’s PAX South. Also no confirmation on if the games will play like their original arcade versions or the later home releases, but they’ll have an “upgraded user interface” at the very least. It’s pretty exciting that all these classics game will finally (legally!) be coming to PC- perfect for newcomers and those of us raised on classic Atari alike.
